Perhaps the disk has already been written on? I've had no problems with Verbatim BD-R SL or Verbatim BD-RE although the latter are actually CMC rebranded.
PeterDuke wrote on 2/1/2015, 4:22 PM
Are you sure that it is a BD and not a DVD?

Not putting it in upside down?

Has the disc already been burnt?

Have you tried another disc that you are sure is virginal?

I also use Verbatim BD-RE disks, for proof viewing of my Blu-ray projects. I use them many times over and have had no problems with them.

The BD drive is TSST BDDVD USB2 external. The disks are new Verbatim. I checked the drive and media in Windows, and it senses them correctly. I also tried several different disks but had the same results. Could there be a problem with the correct driver?
vkmast wrote on 2/2/2015, 11:57 AM
Are the OP's disks Verbatim BD-R LTH type?

Or did you try checking/unchecking "use legacy disc drivers" in DVD A Options/Preferences/Burning tab?
EricLNZ wrote on 2/2/2015, 5:04 PM
I gather the problem only occurs when burning from DVD Architect? If so try burning the iso file with alternative software such as Nero, ImgBurn etc.
shoogy47 wrote on 2/2/2015, 8:23 PM
Thanks for all your suggestions. The disks are BD-R on a spindle. I tried using a different driver, but Windows seems to think the current driver is the most recent. FTI, the drive shows up as CD/CDROM in the device manager. There must be something that will work.
EricLNZ wrote on 2/2/2015, 9:02 PM
What's the Verbatim P/N (Part number) printed on the label on the spindle cover?
shoogy47 wrote on 2/3/2015, 1:01 PM
Sorry, there is no P/N on the spindle cover label, nor on any of the disks. Other than the name Verbatim, the remainder of the label info is in a foreign language, possible french and spanish.

Who Really Makes the Disc?

Realize that most media is produced by a relatively small number of factories, located in several different places. These factories are mostly present in Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, China and India. There are more, but those are the largest ones. The best media generally comes from Japan, Taiwan and Singapore. The worst typically comes from China and Malaysia.

The blank disc brand name on the package means almost nothing. Apple is a great brand, but they do not make their own discs, instead outsourcing to a company like Mitsubishi Chemicals. Common companies like Memorex, Maxell and Imation all outsource to media vendors. Mitsubishi also makes the discs for Verbatim, etc.
It is the media ID that is important, as it reveals the disc manufacturer. Unfortunately, this is not written on packaging or anywhere else. Companies want consumers to be oblivious to this sort of behind-the-scenes information. The Media ID is also used by your DVD burner to determine the burn parameters which includes the maximum burn speed.

I recommend that you use the freeware "DVD Identifier" to read the media ID to learn who *really* made the discs in your box: http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

A sample of DVD Identifier info.
This disc is sold in Europe as Verbatim DataLife BD-R #43804 (spindle of 10).

"This disc is sold in Europe as Verbatim DataLife BD-R #43804 (spindle of 10)"

How old is it?

In the early days, Verbatim used CMC Magnetics for DVD-R because they were part of the DVD+R camp, but recent versions I have bought are made by Verbatim (MCC 03RG20). The packet numbers are RM#171257 and Verbatim#95137 0703-232 for a spindle of 25.
vkmast wrote on 2/3/2015, 7:17 PM
@PeterDuke,
I got these spindles about a year ago. The same supplier currently lists Verbatim BD-Rs with both CMCMAG-BA5 (DataLife) and VERBAT IMe (Professional Line) MIDs. The CMCs are half the price.
Their DVD-Rs are MCC 03 and DVD+Rs are both MCC 004 and Moser Baer.

EricLNZ wrote on 2/4/2015, 2:04 AM
MCC is Mitsubishi Chemical Company who are the parent company of Verbatim. So MCC discs should be genuine Verbatim.

My 25 pack spindle of BD-R SL 6X is P/N 43738 Made in Taiwan.
vkmast wrote on 2/4/2015, 8:55 AM
According to some reports I've seen, the Verbatim BD-Rs like the P/N 43738 with media ID IMe are most likely made in Taiwan by CMC Magnetics under license from Verbatim/Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (its parent company), which is a 100% subsidiary of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. Compared to the cheaper ones like the P/N 43804 (made in Taiwan by CMC) in the DataLife line, the Professional line is made to "tighter specifications than the standards given by the relevant standardisation bodies."
EricLNZ wrote on 2/4/2015, 5:21 PM
@vkmast - I can confirm my P/Ns 43738 have MID: VERBATIMe (000). I was under the wrong impression they were MCC like my Verbatim DVDs. So perhaps Verbatim don't actually produce any BR discs themselves.
PeterDuke wrote on 2/4/2015, 7:54 PM
My Verbatim#43668 0909-02 BD-R (complete with jewel case) says VERBATIMc on the disc itself (MID). The packet of 10 is #43669 0909-02, so I would presume that spindles of 25 or 50 would have different but similar numbers on the packet. They are white, wide (small hub) inkjet printable. Discs with the same data side but different label side would have different but possibly related part numbers on the box.

vkmast, are you saying that your Verbatim#43738 does not say Verbatim on the disc itself (as read by software)?
shoogy47 wrote on 2/4/2015, 9:12 PM
My Verbatim disks are white with very little label info. Only has the name "Verbatim", BD-R, 25GB, 6X write speed. Nothing on the "write" side to indicate the source. Ironically, Vegas 11 and 13 will write to the disk properly, both DVD and Blu-Ray. Or my disks old or "black market"?
vkmast wrote on 2/4/2015, 9:31 PM
@PeterDuke,
no, I'm not saying that (I have not any 43738 discs), just this (source pepst, http://club.myce.com/f179/mitsubishi-kagaku-media-verbatim-bd-r-sl-272904/):
"Verbatim 6x branded Mitsubishi Kagaku Media (Verbatim) BD-R SL"
The relating info in the Disc Manufacturer ID & Media Type ID Licensee List (link above) and Eric's post seem to confirm that they are Verbatim branded. P/Ns 43738 and 43804 are both white wide printable discs (no ID brand). MID can only found by DVD Identifier or similar utility.
Your MID VERBATIMc BD-Rs are probably Taiwan CMC-made under Verbatim license and 4x, right?

@shoogy47,
>>>my disks old or "black market"?<<<
try Disc Identifier mentioned in Steve Mann's post.
EricLNZ wrote on 2/4/2015, 9:31 PM
@shoogy47 - The MID doesn't appear physically on the disk (at least to my knowledge) but is as Peter mentions "read by software".
PeterDuke wrote on 2/4/2015, 11:58 PM
Yes, in that thread, which appears to be just posting performance data for a variety of media and burners, both pepst, a moderator, and therefore likely to be knowledgeable in the field, and EZ647 claim that the Verbatim discs that they post are made by CMC Magnetics in Taiwan. They give no support for the claim. I'll bet it was not mentioned on the package!

However, even if it is true, it doesn't matter really. If the MID is given as VERBATIM, then the discs would have been made and tested to Verbatim's specifications, and therefore are de facto Verbatim. It is quite different from CMC Magnetic churning out discs with their own name on them and then flogging them off to the masses.

It has been suggested by some people, that the discs made by CMC Magnetics and other manufacturers could be tested by batch (not necessarily every single disc) and the better ones sold at a higher price by resellers. (I am not aware that CMC Magnetics brand is ever used on packaging, but I may just be ignorant on that point.) I know of no evidence to support this suggestion, only that it is feasible.

Note that if the MID is given as VERBAT and the type given as IMa, this should probably be read as VERBATIMa.
vkmast wrote on 2/5/2015, 5:50 AM
Agree with most of what PeterDuke says.

>>> claim that the Verbatim discs that they post are made by CMC Magnetics in Taiwan. They give no support for the claim. I'll bet it was not mentioned on the package.<<<
True, CMC is not mentioned on the package, only Made in Taiwan is.
http://www.verbatim-europe.co.uk/en/prod/bd-r-sl-25gb-6x-wide-printable-25-pack-spindle-no-id-brand-43738/. For a better view, "Download Assets".
Going by the info in the Licensee List it's not unreasonable to assume that CMC does make them.

But as he says, it doesn't matter really. As Steve Mann says in his post (quoting from www.digitalfaq.com) above, "realize that most media is produced by a relatively small number of factories, located in several different places." And later, "Unfortunately, this (who really makes the disc) is not written on packaging or anywhere else."

And the Verbatim site mentioned above still has the following statement in Support/FAQ.
"Q. Will Verbatim continue the trend of using multiple manufacturers for DVD media for the same product/reorder numbers?"

Not that all of this is helping the OP in his issue too much.
Btw, did he ever try checking/unchecking "use legacy disc drivers" in DVD A Options/Preferences/Burning tab or burning with ImgBurn/other alternative software?
ImgBurn will show you the media ID as well. See Mode/Discovery.

shoogy47 wrote on 2/5/2015, 10:27 AM
Yes, I did try checking/unchecking " "use legacy disc drivers" in DVD A Options/Preferences/Burning tab, and it made no difference. Still the question remains, why does Vegas recognize the disk properly but Architect Pro 6 does not. All other programs I use recognizes the drive and disk properly. BTW, the burn speed is 6x, and shows up in the device manager window. What next?
vkmast wrote on 2/5/2015, 11:00 AM
>>>What next?<<<
You could try toggling "skip drive database..." in Options/Preferences/General.

Or forget trying to burn in DVD A 6 and take Eric's suggestion earlier in the thread.
Try Make BD > Prepare image in DVD A and burn the iso file with alternative software such as ImgBurn. Don't burn at max speed.
Many of us do it like this anyway.
