Subject:Error with uLaw playback

When I save a 48kHz, 24bit sound file as uLaw (8bit, 8k), Sound Forge gives me the error "an error occurred during the current operation. An unsupported media type was requested" and won't play the file. The file plays fine through Windows Media Player so I'm assuming it's not my A/D interface (Focusrite Sapphire Pro 40). I also tried saving the audio as 48kHz, 16bit because that's what I've always used in the past. That gave me the same error. I've never had problems playing back uLaw files from within Sound Forge but I have a new computer and new interface. I have no idea what the problem is.

Windows Media Player isn't using ASIO, so it's not a true apples-to-apples comparison. You're quite likely resampling all of your system audio on the fly to meet a common sample rate.

What happens if you change your driver model in Forge to Wave Classic or MS Mapper?

Thanks for the response. I changed it to Windows Classic Wave Driver and the uLaw file plays. It seems that the audio is still playing back through my Focusrite interface but by changing the driver, I'm no longer using the Focusrite driver. Is that ok? Seems strange but if it works, why not.

Is your Focusrite the main playback device in Windows? That would explain why audio is still playing using the Windows drivers.

The reason you can't use the Focusrite drivers is that they can't handle the bitrate of a mu-law file. Most modern ASIO drivers just won't support lower quality audio.

Thank again, Rob. So my using the Windows driver won't affect audio quality? That's all I'd be worried about. As long as quality doesn't change, I'd use any driver, even Rochester (ya gotta be older to get that reference)

I spoke with Focusrite and they say that using the Windows driver will not affect quality but they could not support the use of a non Focusrite driver (companies love disclaimers)

I only need the change the driver when I'm editing uLaw files, otherwise I'll keep using the Sapphire driver.
