I don't know about MSI or Gigabyte, but word on the street is that the ASUS A7M266 is the bomb. It uses AMD northbridge chipset, and VIA (Via=satin) southbridge. See what others think though. speedracer |

I've researched the brains out of this question for the past few months, and finally ran out of time and had to make a decision last night. I wound up getting a Leadtek 7350KDA board for my new system. It uses the SiS 735 chipset, which is much better at sustained HD throughput than the Via chipsets (even with the Via PCI latency patches). Got it for $83 at Newegg.com. If you can wait a month or so, you might want to hold out for a SiS 745 board (MSI 745 Ultra, Leadtek 7450KDA, or EPoX 8S7A). Either that, or if you don't need the built-in video of the nForce 420-D boards, get an nForce 415-D when it comes out. Any of these will work better for pro audio applications than a Via chipset board will. I may eBay the Leadtek board and get one of these when they come out. However, if you're up against a deadline and need to get something from the list you posted, I'd recommend the MSI K7N420 Pro board. It's become very stable with the v2.3 BIOS, according to reports on Amdmb.com and elsewhere, and it doesn't suffer from the Via hard drive throughput problems. Just be careful about the RAM that you get - make sure it's matched and high quality, and get 2 sticks of it (not 1 or 3 sticks). Quick note: boards that say they use an AMD 761 chipset still use a Via 686B southbridge, which unless I misread things is where the PCI problems lie. You'd still be better off with a SiS or nForce board for pro audio. However, multi-processor boards that use the new AMD 762 (a.k.a. 760MPX) chipset use an AMD southbridge and not a Via one, so they're supposedly safe. |
