Hi. I understand that minus or plus 12 semitones takes the pitch up or down one octave - but what if you want to emulate playing a sound on a tape machine at half speed?

Is there a way to calculate this?

Thank you.

Dividing the sample rate in half will bring the pitch down one octave, as well as half-speed, like an analog tape machine.
Change the playback sample rate in 'Properties', or right-click the sample rate box in the bottom 'status' bar. Resample back to the original rate in "Process> Resample" or in the 'Save as' dialog.

Hi. Thank you for your reply. I am a bit confused. What does this mean: as well as half-speed, like an analog tape machine. ?? And were you saying that resampling does the same thing as pitch bend?

Thanks. I need a lot of clarification and explanation if you don't mind because I really have no idea what the hell I'm doing!

Simplest way to do this is to double-click the sample rate display below the waveform display and type in half it's current value. This will do exactly the same thing as slowing down a tape to half speed.

If you want to, you can then go to process/resample to convert the file back to the original sample rate, but it's not necessary.

"What does this mean: as well as half-speed, like an analog tape machine?"
- For instance, on an open reel deck, changing the tape speed from 30 ips to 15 ips ..or..15 ips to 7.5 ips. Sorry this concept may seem foreign to younger folks.

"And were you saying that resampling does the same thing as pitch bend?"
- Sort of.. though I'm not sure the algorithm is the same. In your scenerio, resampling/saving back to it's original rate so it always plays back at the altered rate/pitch on any device. The menu item Process> Resample itself does not affect the pitch or speed. A common usage is converting an audio file to 44.1kHz. for a music CD. (if it wasn't that rate already)
The "Effects> Pitch> Shift" maintains the same PB speed/tempo.
