Is there any way I can prevent a track from splitting up when I copy and paste a part of the track. It gets confusing trying to get the parts back where they were.

I'm not exactly sure what you meant. Are ripple edits on? (CTRL+L toggles) Can you give a small example? Remember that whatever you paste gets pasted at the current position of the cursor.
