I bought the Behringer T1950 Magician 8-channel Tube pre. I know it's not that pro, but I am very happy with the sound I get from my grand. |

How much do you want to spend? Avalon's are nice but not cheap. Your also going to want good condenser mic(s) too if you don't have some already. |

If you can afford an Avalon I'm sure you'll be happy, to say the least. I've been shopping for outboard gear and setting up a rack for live classical music recording... and sorting out what I need in outboard gear vs. what my software can do for me. imo, Some of the less-expensive but still good-quality mic-pre candidates are the PreSonus DigiTube & BlueTube boxes, the JoeMeek MQ3, and then step up to FocusRite. Check out the DigiDesign/Focusrite $450 "M-box". hth ~Christopher |

All of the above are good suggestions, also don't forget the DBX stuff. They have a wide variety on price selections and also along with mic pre's they have combination boxes with mic/pre, compressor, de-esser, exciter...so you get more bang for your buck. |
