16-bit PNG/Import Media Sequence Bug

Not sure if this has been posted yet--search turned up empty.

If you are trying to import a sequence of 16-bit PNG's using the import media function, Vegas 13 improperly alters the gamma of the sequence. In full-range mode, this can be corrected with a levels fx set to gamma 2.2.

In 8-bit mode, the difference isn't as severe, but still noticeable.

You can test this by rendering out a png sequence from Vegas in 32-full range mode, which will create 16-bit PNG's. Note that saving off the clipboard always yields an 8-bit PNG, for whatever reason, and those will import normally.

A (fairly useless) workaround is to drag 16-bit PNG's directly onto the timeline; Vegas doesn't alter the gamma in that case.

If anyone has a better workaround, please let me know...

[Just stopping by there for curiosity and found this post]

This bug is acknowledged by SCS for years. The fact that it is still not fixed is beyond my imagination. This tells a lot about the way SCS cares about its user base.

If anyone has a better workaround, please let me know...
You may consider converting your images to some other format, deal with the gamma shift with levels FX applied to event or media, or ..., like I did before VP11 release, to switch off Bugas ...

OK, two workarounds I've found:

1) use photoshop and batch process your PNG's to 8-bit

2) if you're trying to render to PNG from 32-bit full range as for example an intermediate, nest your 32FR project inside an 8-bit project. This forces Vegas to create 8-bit PNGs (that enjoy the benefits of 32/FR processing) which will then import correctly into Vegas as image sequences.

That's all I got for now...
