years ago i used 'swishmax' which had the effect as a preset and simply imported a stills sequence..

iirc heroglyph by prodad also has it somewhere in it's effects, as does ae.

if it's for a one off i'm not sure you'll want to buy either, unless it's a paying project....

Lou you can do this in Vegas Pro Type Titler quite easily

Also using normal text but the issue is you cannot kern from the character centre in normal so use a type face this is squarish

Used a line grid comp = cut but everything is in Vegas so if this will do give me a shout and i will zip it to you.

Rory, I like your approach. Here is one I did in Vegas. The flip occurs at the 17 second mark. Also, Vegasaur's Transquare 3d cubes animated mattes animated mattes give you an easy way to do these types of animations.

Rory, to get around the kerning you might try a monospaced font. Examples would be like the OCR A and Lucida Console fonts. These should eliminate your kerning issues but these typically aren't "pretty" fonts.

@DrLumen absolutely the type faces where the characters are the same width tend to look unusual. I noticed that in some countries they used these type faces for directional signs and strangely enough were easier to read from a distance even though the negative space between was regimental.
The nice thing about PTT is its ability to centre the animation from centre of each character which would help with the spacing issue and the rolling effect.
worth a go but a bit more hassle to see what we get.
