Rendering Vegas vs. Factory

I'm a video editor and my regular editing tool is Speed Razor. When dumping to tape, Speed Razor plays the unaltered video from the source files, and just renders out any transitions or effects.

Just got Video Factory. I edited a 30 minute program, and when I went to print to tape, it rendered the entire project.

If I upgrade to Vegas Video, does it work the same way, or does it just render out the transitions and effects?

Thanks in advance

Video Factory 2.0a (and higher) and Vegas 3 will only render what needs to be rendered. If your input and output are both DV, then it will just copy the data through without rendering.

However, Video Factory needs some "help" in knowing what doesn't have to be rendered. If any part of an event needs to be rendered, it will render the entire event. The best way around this is to "split" your event just before and after transitions. If you overlap two clips for a crossfade, place a split (position the cursor and type S) on the timeline just before the overlap and just after the overlap. VF will then recognize the non-overlapped portion as a separate event whic h doesn't have to be rendered.

Vegas does this automatically.

Video Factory does have to make a file copy before outputting tape. Is this what you mean by render or is it recompressing and compressing the whole file like Chienworks is describing before his fix?

This isn't my experience. It appears to just do a file copy up to the point of the transition.

As a test, I put 2 events on the timeline with a small transition. Rendered to DV format, then split the events just before and after the transition like you suggested. The rendering times were identical.

I go with Jimcho on this. I have not seen the behavior you describe Chienworks.

Which version of Video Factory are you folks using? I stopped using it at 2.0a and upgraded to Vegas. Maybe 2.0b or 2.0c has the improved rendering intelligence in it now.

I had one project with a few crossfades that took 11 hours to render. After i put the splits in, the rendering time dropped to about 25 minutes.

I am currently using 2.0C, but I never saw this in 2.0 either. Now most of the time I am creating a DV AVI file, and not outputting to tape from VF. I generally use some other software that doesn't need to create a complete file to output. I ordinarily use VF for some effx. I have always seen it render the effx and file copy the unaffected video without having to split at the effx. Don't know what is different than your setup though.

Oh well. All i can say is that my experience was consistent with what the Sonic Foundry guys posted in here. I got the split tip directly from them. I guess you folks were luckier than me :)
