VHS tape digitization video/audio sync problem

This is not really a Vegas issue, but wanted to throw this out to the various gurus out there for their input.

I have recently ran some old home VHS tapes through a SuperVHS player into an old Osprey capture card. Some of the tapes run from 30 minutes to almost 2 hours, so I just let the tapes run and did not monitor the conversion process. When I pull up the digitized files in Vegas Pro, after about 30 minute the audio and video get badly out of sync.

I have trashed the old Osprey card and have a Black Magic Intensity card ready to use, but before I start the process again, any opinions of what caused the loss of sync? I assume the original VHS tape is not a contributor, although it may be. Settings on the playback machine? Settings on the original Osprey capture card (which was by no means state of the art)?

Thanks in advance for your input.

With some video cards, if there is a break in control track (recording turned off, blank between recorders) then sync will be lost. If you monitor it while capturing, you might need to start a new capture at tape breakup points.

Just one possible reason.

I had an ATI capture card and tore my hair out trying to get that to work. Gave up.

For VHS captures, you get perfect results every time by just using the pass-through on DV camcorder. For better captures, use an analog to DV capture device that has a TBC.

Totally agree.
