POLL: what speed / data do you get for how much?

ushere wrote on 9/12/2014, 8:52 PM
all this cloud based stuff is all well and good given:

a. fast enough connections

b. plans that are affordable for 'serious' data usage

i can't really comment as i live rurally, with a 2.5mb dl and 64kb up. neither of which is of much use for shuffling anything other than low res video about.

so: what speed / data do you get for how much?

and as an after thought, mobile plan that makes video a reality as opposed to a joke!

btw. telstra 200gb month / upto 20mb down - 1.5 up (HA HA!) $90 month / adsl2+

When I'm working with video I'm on a boat in Truk Lagoon in the Federated States of Micronesia. Connectivity is at dial up speeds and it's spotty. I cannot rely on the cloud. All my files and programs are on my Dell laptop.

When I'm at home in the Portland, Oregon area, I have Verizon FIOS service at their slowest rate. Will have to check the rate. I'm paying $50 USD per month for that.

Regards,

Kimberly

AT&T "Uverse Max" plan. 12 mbps down; 1.2 mbps up. I always get at least that when I measure. $56 / months (USD), including $7/month equipment rental.

Optus cable. $55/month.
20Mbps down, 500Kbps up.

Still too slow up for my liking although it does get there eventually.

I did have someone in the shop who does HD OBs over 4G. The unit he uses had six, yes six, 4G modems on it with various carriers, cost was $1,000 month.

Time Warner Cable Internet and TV. $116/month special rate. Upgraded to 20MBs speed.
Actual download speed = 16 MBs. Upload 2.35 MBs

Local politicians here have granted TWC a monopoly. I have asked Verizon FIOS that question over the years and they say they have been denied access to this area by the Town of New Windsor, NY
The people keep electing the same people so I guess we are stuck with TWC.

Soon the current FCC will approve a merger between Comcast and TWC.
Comcast is the country’s #1 cable and Internet company and Time Warner Cable is #2. They both regularly rank at the bottom of the barrel in customer-service surveys. Put them together and you get one subpar giant offering service to two-thirds of U.S. homes. Comcast has admitted that prices will go up.
The merger would allow Comcast to use its market power to dictate the terms of broadband openness, cost and access at a time when the U.S. lags well behind other developed nations on each of these measures.

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler is a former lobbyist for the telecoms and will soon go forward with a proposal to allow Internet Service Providers, like Comcast and Verizon, to charge websites for higher quality and faster delivery of their products. This is otherwise known as the “fast lane” -- because by paying for this service, a company like Netflix, could improve the quality and speed of their entertainment stream to consumers. That following a recent court case in which the DC Court of Appeals put a knife in the back of Net Neutrality.

The DC Circuit Court of Appeals recently struck down the loosely written Open Internet Order by the FCC. The new rule change I described will most likely be passed by the FCC because despite massive protests online, those who will benefit from the rule change (network and cable news companies) have been pretty much silent on the matter. Attempts to stop it in the Congress have been blocked and the media have been silent on that too.

They will report on it after it is a done deal.

So I now pay what I consider too much for slow internet service. With the changes proposed by the "telecom insiders" in the FCC, I cannot imagine the situation will improve.

Looks like the cable companies are offering some decent upload speeds.
That's always been my pet peeve with DSL.
GeeBax wrote on 9/13/2014, 5:25 PM
There is an ad on Australian television at present for a ISP that says Australia's Internet speed is slower that that in Hungary, and they are right.

I live in a rural area, barely 80 kms. from a major city, and I have a local ISP with a direct radio link to a nearby tower, and I can only get 256Kbs down and up for $30 a month, so I beat you all for the slowest service, perhaps except for Kimberly.

And no, I cannot get a mobile service that beats it either, despite being within sight of a huge telecommunications tower.

And to top it off, out NBN service, based on fibre, goes past my door and they won't connect me to it.

Well, I am pretty amazed by the people who say they are paying $50 /month for huge download and even upload speeds. I hope we are comparing apples to apples here because if the $50 charge is just for the quoted speed it might make sense - but if it is a bundled service as it usually is - then these posts made above are wacko to me.
Consider this, my residence is in a sophisticated metro area of the United States - I am actually physically next to one of the largest and fastest fibre optic trunks in the continental US. But my service delivered by fortune 500 top of line carrier to the house is 768kbps DSL and upload is half that. I am grandfathered into the service by an old contract so I only pay $15.00 a month. And unless I am willing to pay $100.00 a month I can not do any better.
