I deal with a lot of audio, sometimes I will get hour long chunks at a time. At times I will get many spikes during the narration. I've been trying to find a way to level out the peaks in one step, instead of decreasing each one, one at a time. I'm currently using Sound Forge 4.5h if there is any plug-in, upgrade or process I can use that would help would be great!! Thanks! |

Try using some compression. Go to Effects->Dynamics and try the "Graphic" option. Doing this will "squash" all of the peaks in your file to the specified threshold. Ted |

If you are recording and/or loading the analouge audio in real time though a sound card you could run your signal though an outboard Compressor/Limiter. For narration I personally like the DBX 166a or 1066 with the "Peak Stop" limiter in addtion to the soft-knee compressor. The Sound Forge graphic compresor also works good but takes a little getting used to adjusting it. You can also use this for expanding if there is a little background noise by adding some curve points on the line graph. This takes a lot of expermentation to get right. This will process the whole file at once but a 60 min. file will probably take a few minutes or more depending on your PC. |
