Microsoft Patch Update

Steve Mann wrote on 8/27/2014, 2:53 PM
Today is Patch Tuesday, so if you are using Windows auto-update (like me) you will be getting the replacement patch for the flawed patch of two weeks ago.
Note that Windows Update and Automatic Updates do not remove the old version so you should see if it is installed on your PC and remove it if it is.

The following is from Microsoft. (Must have been written by an engineer because the grammar is really bad):
"Microsoft strongly recommends that customers who have not uninstalled the 2982791 update [i.e., the old version, released on Patch Tuesday] do so prior to applying the 2993651 update [the new version]." This recommendation applies to users whether they are having problems with the old update or not. The update addresses three Windows kernel bugs, two of which could result in privilege elevation and the third in exposure of sensitive kernel information.

First, to check if the update was installed on your PC. Go to "Control Panel", "Programs", "Programs and Features", and click on "View Installed Updates".
Sort by "Installed Date" because KB2982791 will be one of the most recent updates. Or you can search for "KB2982791". Select it and click on "Uninstall" and you're done. (You will need to reboot after removing the patch).

Thanks so much Steve, I was scratching my head this morning and wasted several hours as I do a backup on my server once a month and for some strange reason, all computers appeared offline, so it was impossible to do a backup.

After checking your thread, I noticed that all my computers including my WHS2011 had KB2982791 installed. Uninstalled on all and now everything is back to normal.

Apparently none of those bad updates were installed on my system, they're nowhere to be found.

what circumstances required it's installation?

What versions of Windows could be affected? (Presumably not XP since its updates are dead.)

Vista and later.
Server 2003 and later.

I checked mine (Win 8.1 pro 64 bit) and that patch was never installed on my system although I had a boatload of 32 bit patches on 8/14/14.

Bob, you could check to see if you have the bad patch.

My Windows 7 machines received the bogus patch on 8/12/2014, none of my Windows 8.1 machines did. All are 64 bit.

I appear to have dodged that particular bullet, from that infamous Gun-Slinger "Bogus Patch". Thanks John . . . Great phrase.

I checked the link that @Grazie provided and there are actually 4 update numbers:

KB2982791
KB2970228
KB2975719
KB2975331

I did have the first installed. This is a bit complicated and I am surprised that MS has not released a uninstaller to limit liability. Most users are not skilled enough for this kind of techno. I am not saying I can't, just that we techno types are perhaps being a bit over zealous.

Steve,
That was my 'attempt' at humor. I did check, found it, deleted it, and installed the updated fix. Thanks for the detailed information.
