Subject:A question about recording vocals

Is there a way to hear your voice along with the track in the headphones while you are recording your vocals (just like in a studio)?

I have a basic setup with my mic plugged directly into my PC. When I hit record in Acid, I can hear my track in the headphones, but I can't hear my voice while I'm singing into the mic, even though it is recording my voice.

I HOPE I MADE THIS QUESTION CLEAR...CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME. THANKS

Maybe a (compact) external mixer would be the answer?
Preferably with direct outs as found e.g in Mackie's VLZ series.
This would give you the option to mix your playback to taste and additionally feed your voice to the monitors/headphones. Then use the direct out of the mic channel to feed the audiocard with your voice only. You could also use aux sends to feed the card, or route a bus to one of the cards input(s). Many options.
In most cases an external mixer would also give you better mic preamps, as most buildt in preamps in soundcards are just not that good.

Is there any way to accomplish this without having to purchase extra equipment?

I had the same problem, and its easily fixed without spending money.
goto control panel->Multimedia make sure (Show volume control on taskbar) is ticked.
then goto the speaker on the taskbar, double click and make sure the
MIC channel unmute and a away you go!

I agree with Petecr. As long as you have a full duplex sound card (which most are these days), this should clear your issue right up.
