Subject:What's legal and what's not

I wish everything was in black and white about copyrighted things. Are the loops copyrighted yet "royalty free". I'd like to sell my own music, but my drums are mostly sonic foundry loops. Also intro sound effects are sometimes sonic foundry loops.I've also got some nice data becker loops but are scared to use them.I just don't want to waste any more time with those loops if I can't legally use them.I can make up my own drum sounds and make loops ,but they don't sound like real drums.I don't want to wait 'till I'm rich and famous and then they decide to sue me. Please someone who really knows give me an answer.

Hardy,

The loops and software from Sonic Foundry is royalty free, unless otherwise specified. This means you can make all the music you want, using all the SoFo samples you want, sell it for whatever you want, and you don't have to pay a dime to SoFo in royalties. Nice, isn't it?

Let me reiterate one more time:

UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, you can use the software and loops, sell music you make with them, and keep it all to yourself. K?

Hope this helps,
Nick LaMartina

Thanks Nick, Just one more question. If for instance a drum loop has "Good Sounds 98" or "Sonic Foundry 01" under the Properties tab/Copyright does that mean they don't want you to sell your music using them, or not to sell the loop individually.

Hardyman,

Well, you can never sell the loops, individually or otherwise. That's what the copyright is for. As for the allowable use and selling of works that contain derivatives thereof, it depends. Where did you buy/download the disc/sample? What is the collection called? Is there any information on the website?

I'll echo what nlamartina says (in regards to Sonic Foundary loops):

The loops you purchase from SF (or download free from their website) are royalty free. You can use them in your projects, create your own music/song, turn around sell the song - what ever.

You CAN NOT sell the individual samples.

As for other sample loops - you need to get that information from the source you get the loops. For example, there are about a gazillion other websites offering their CDs with royalty free loops and samples - and their website offer free samples of their loops. You need to 2xcheck with those site prior to working music from them...but I'm pretty positive the concept is the same.

As for me...I'm making it easy for myself. All the music I use from loops and samples come from SF. Keeps it nice and neat!

Hope this helps.
