Subject: Sample Rate Problems

Hey, I've been trying to create karaoke versions of songs, but the problem is, how I need to upload them requires the songs to be at a lower sample. So I change the sample rate, and obviously that changes the song completely. Audio Studio automatically opens all songs at the sample rate 48,000 hz, and I'm guessing that could be what the song's preferences are, but, I'm not sure what to do here, as most mp3 files use 44,100 hz, so I'm a bit confused, can anyone help me figure out if there is a way for me to fix this problem. What I need is for a song to be be converted into a 44,100 hz sample rate, without affecting the way the song sounds. Is there a way to do this on Audio Studio, and if not, are there other methods?

Sound Forge will open the file at whatever sample rate the file is. If it's showing them as 48,000 then they are 48,000.

What do you mean by "changes the song completely"? Unless you're changing it to some horrendously low rate like 8,000 you really shouldn't notice any difference. Unless, of course, you mean all you're doing is changing the rate at which the existing samples are played back, in which case the speed of the music would change too. If that's the case then you should be using Process / Resample instead of whatever you're doing.

I'm also curious why you need to change the sample rate.

If you are using ASIO drivers for your Soundcard in SoundForge , SF can Play any file at the "speed" of the currently selected samplerate of the Soundcard. In this instance SF adopts the samplerate of the Soundcard, regardless of the file's samplerate.
Maybe that is your problem.
To avoid that, just make sure either 'Microsoft Sound Mapper', 'Direct Sound Surround Mapper' or 'Windows Classic Wave Driver' is selected on SF Menu|Options|Preferences|Audio Tab - in this circumstance SF will open and Play files at their embedded samplerate/speed.

So that is how SoundForgePro behaves; presumably SoundForge Audio Studio behaves similar; otherwise you could try setting your SoundCard to the samplerate in use at the time.....
