Subject:Comparing samples/loops in and out of acid

Ok I just noticed something, but before I get into it here is how I use Acid 3.0e. I use it basically like a four track to inspire ideas and move quick before I go into Cubase.
I used to think all the samples and loops I have were of poor quality or mabye over processed to use to my benefit. After preveiwing a Rhodes loop in the Acid explorer I noticed something wrong, the sample sounded like it was 8-bit and the panning seamed to flutter. Then I listened to the same sample in other applications and even in a simple wav player, the quality was remarkably better. This seemed to happen after I updated to acid pro3.0e from c. I have 512 ram, plenty of speed with a 1.2 Athalon. I have also defragged and checked all of my setting as far as buffers and no other apps in the background. Any ideas? I love Acid and I think it's quality, something must have changed in my setup, or is this an issue with the "e" version? Cheers

Gitdave,

I can think of a couple reasons the playback is funky:

1. The tempo of your project is far below that of the sample. If your project is set at 70 BPM, and the sample loop is Acid'ized to 200 BPM, the program will stretch it all to hell since the project is less than half as fast as the loop wants to be played. This results in a flanging, stuttering sound.

2. The key of your project is a long distance from the loop default. Again, say your project is in A, and the loop is Acid'ized a major seventh away. It's going to sound rather odd, especially if the instrument in the loop is rich with overtones.

Bottom line: The more you stretch/bend the loops, the worse they'll sound. Try adjusting either the tempo or key to see if things improve.

Hope this helps,
Nick LaMartina

Thanks for the reply, sounds like a good suggestion. Only thing is I prepared the loop correctly as it's my own sample which I intended for use with acid. Many other loops do the same thing. I'm almost certain that it may be my config has changed. I've had months of flawless use and my troubleshooting could be in question. Ya know a blind eye thing. Thanks

Yep I tried it out, no matter what tempo it is still the same thing, damn it sucks too, I've got so much work done lately and this will slow me down a lot.

I'm relatively new to recording in Acid, but I just read the Sims Teach Yourself Acid 3.0 book and there's a lot of stuff about recording your own loops and loop properties. I can't even begin to explain all the details involved, especially since I'm just learning them myself, but in the loop properties go to the stretch tab. This is where you can adjust the beats and adjust how your loops play back in Acid. Sound Forge also has a whole set of tools to deal with cleaning up loops for use in Acid.

Really, get this book. I've learned so much about how to make my Acid tracks sound better, and there's a heap of info about beat properties and cleaning up your loops.

Yeah I've got the book and great it is, but still acid is hurting as far as play back and exproting files. When I export it captures the same flaws that it plays. I'm bummed, I hate to kill my computer other things are starting to screw up, battery and fruityloops don't play well now and well damn I'm going to lose so much stuff. At least I sort of have it all backed up I think. So many things to keep track of, it may be a virus although It will be the first time for me ever that I know of. Norton, which usually crashes anthing it seems to touch has detected something wrong with simsynth. Any ideas for a usually clean running machine to clean this crap up? I have to get a better habit of working with these programs in case this happens again. I know to not wash darks with whites. ALLLLLL CRAP
