Subject:Duplicate track problem

I just got Music Studio 10 and spotted something unusual with the duplicate track function when used on a MIDI track. If you create a MIDI track and then make a duplicate of it everything seems fine. If you modify the music in the copy of the track then that works fine as well and has no effect on the original track you copied from. However, if you then change the instrument used on that track (the program) then it has an effect on BOTH tracks although only the text on the track copy indicates the new program. BOTH tracks now use the same instrument. Is this a bug, or is it supposed to work like this? Anyone else noticed this? Is there a workaround? |

I can't duplicate your problem. Make sure that when you duplicate the track, you don't have BOTH tracks highlighted when you change MIDI instruments. If you just select the one track, it should only change the instrument for one track. You are probably duplicating the track, and then both tracks are "selected". You need to click once in the track you want to change and then it should work as you would expect. B Message last edited on6/18/2014 7:43:48 AM byb.complex. |

Thanks, but I don't think that's the problem. I had a play around and I think I can more-or-less see what's happening. Here's what I do: 1. Start a new project. 2. Add a new MIDI track. It is created with MIDI output = DLS Soft Synth and the instrument is Piano 1. 3. Add some notes to the track. 4. Duplicate the track. Duplicate also has MIDI output = DLS Soft Synth and the instrument is Piano 1. 5. Delete the existing notes from the duplicate and add some new (different) ones. 6. When this plays both tracks are using Piano 1. 7. Now, on the duplicate track, select 60's organ 1. 8. Now original track shows Piano 1 and duplicate shows 60's organ 1. 9. When this plays both tracks are using 60's organ 1. Oops. I think the problem may be that the output from both tracks is to the same DLS Soft Synth. If I create another soft synth and make the output of the duplicate track the new synth then, although the instrument names are still wrong, I can eventually fiddle around so that each track is using a different instrument which is named correctly. It still looks like there is something a little flaky here but I can work around it. I probably don't fully understand what the track inputs and outputs are. |

Make sure the MIDI channel of the duplicated track is different from the original. Peter |

Yes! That seems to work pretty well. Thanks. If you have several tracks that share the same synth and channel number, and you change the instrument on one of them it still doesn't update the instrument name on all the other tracks, but I can live with that. |

Yes, that sounds like a bug. Peter |
