Last night i was transferring some more old open reel to digital. The S/N ratio was pretty good, about 45dB or so, but i still used some pretty steep Noise Reduction to get rid of the tape hiss and hum, which probably weren't noticeable in the original recording on 50 year old equipment. I used 3 passes at about 30dB each and knocked the noise between the songs down to about -120dB (!!!!) without noticeably affecting the music. However, when zooming in the timeline vertically i noticed one section that still had a little bit of visible waveform, so i copied it to a new file and normalized it. The result is quite intriguing. I think i'll call it "Alien Radio Signal". I especially enjoyed watching the X-Y axis display while listening to it. http://www.chienworks.com/media/alien_radio_signal.wav For those curious about the technical and Sound Forge aspects of this: Pioneer RT-707 -> Tascam US-1800 -> Sound Forge @ 44100Hz, 16 bit.
