Hardly OT - why can't I hear audio?

PeterWright wrote on 5/16/2014, 12:36 AM
Speakers are working fine, and are connected to Green output port of sound card
Device Manager says sound card is working properly and latest drivers installed
Audio levels in programs such as Vegas show audio happening at good levels

No sound is coming out though.

I'd appreciate any ideas.

Thanks

Thanks Grazie - I've done that several times - it happened yesterday and has been silent since.

I'm glad I've got another machine to work with, but .....

I've even tried removing then replacing the sound card, but no luck yet.

Good questions Grazie - yesterday I did have problems booting, but eventually got into Windows ok.

This morning similar, so I unplugged the PC, vacuumed the dust, reseated sound card etc, and it booted fine, but no sound ....

Have you tried outputting to another Audio monitor/speaker? Anything.

Grazie wrote on 5/16/2014, 2:35 AM
Are your speakers switched ON? Can you plug the speakers into another SOURCE and check?

. . I'm still trying . .

Yes thanks for trying Grazie - yes, I'd already unplugged the speakers, & plugged them into my Mobile and they're working fine.

welcome to my world.... well unless the knobs at 7+

i suppose you've tried plugging into mb audio output? with/without audio card.

and, i suppose you've opened up windows own sound mixer and checked nothings muted or switched to the wrong output?

my sympathies..
PeterWright wrote on 5/16/2014, 3:28 AM
Thanks Leslie - yes I tried those - it could be the sound card has died, but Windows says its fine.

I have a USB sound card on another PC which I'll try ......
ushere wrote on 5/16/2014, 4:26 AM
did you try the motherboard audio out?
PeterWright wrote on 5/16/2014, 4:31 AM
Yes Leslie, sorry I didn't reply on this before.

I've put the speaker plug into the MB speaker out, but I'm not quite sure how we "switch" output from one card to another (Windows 7) but no results so far ...

If you haven't already done this, this is the first thing I'd check. Your config might be different than this, but that correct output device should be selected.

thanks jerry, that's what i meant about windoz own sound mixer...
PeterWright wrote on 5/16/2014, 5:30 AM
Thanks guys, yes I have been trying the Windows mixer - strangely when I select the Green speaker outlet it says speakers are not plugged in, even though they are.

One thing that really peeves me is that just about every online solution I've sought seems to lead to a registry scanner which finds lots of faults than wants me to register so it can fix. I don't trust these.
PeterWright wrote on 5/16/2014, 5:55 AM
Not sure whether the screen pic will show correctly, but these windows are telling me that the Black digital output on the Realtek board is active, not the Green one, but even if I plug the speakers into the black socket, nothing changes.

Sorry, I can't get the image to happen - it's sitting on Dropbox here:

peter, take the s off https and it'll show up...

really very strange, what's your mb?
Grazie wrote on 5/16/2014, 6:33 AM
Pete, while in DB right click on the JPG and choose SHARE DROPBOX LINK. And it's that you post here. Did you do that?

g

Grazie wrote on 5/16/2014, 6:34 AM
You need that SHARE DB Link.

g

PeterWright wrote on 5/16/2014, 6:38 AM
Yes Grazie, that's the link I posted above, but when I incorporated it in [ ....] brackets and added "img=" inside the [ ] it didn't work, even when I removed the s from http

I guess it's just not my night.

Grazie wrote on 5/16/2014, 6:40 AM
I see your piccie now.

OK, try Right Click on each of those "Not Plugged In" speaker devices and choose DISABLE. As here:-

Yours are RED - mine are GREYED-OUT.

Just making sure - yeah?

G

PeterWright wrote on 5/16/2014, 6:49 AM
I tried that Grazie - but it keeps reporting the Green/normal speaker output as not plugged in, even though it is!

... and it has the digital/black output as the default device, and even if I disable it, I can't enable the green one.

I think I'll sleep on it, and I'm out working all day tomorrow, so I'm giving it plenty of time to change its mind...
