GoPro mp4 very slow preview in Vegas 12

Hi folks, it used to be the AVCHD, that was sluggish and jerky. But in the meantime, I have got myself a super-fast, powerful computer.
But the history is repeating itself.
Now it is the mp4 files recorded by my Gopro Hero 3 black camera. It is practically impossible to edit such video in Vegas, because there is no playback to talk about. It is so sluggish and slow - the files are useless for practical purposes in Vegas.
The funny thing, the same video plays back, as smooth as hot oil, in VLC media player. Do I have to transcode the files? I hope not.. Is there as setting or two I can tweak, in Vegas, to make the video play back in real-time? Is Vegas 13 better with respect to this?

Consensus is to convert to Cineform using the free GoPro Studio app.
Even works on my old dual core.

There is something about GoPro files that Vegas 12 can't handle. Vegas 13 is no better. Vegas 11 seemed to work fine. Considering that many of us use GoPro files, you'd think SCS would make fixing this issue a priority.

Of course, all files shot in the Protune mode should be converted to Cineform in order to set the flag in the converted files so that the codec can properly apply the Protune S-Log LUT.

The Vegas 12 AVC decoder has issues with GoPro Black files.
The Vegas 13 decoder is the exact same decoder version as Vegas 12.
The Vegas 11 decoder seems fine.

There are various workarounds discussed in the threads. Choose what seems best for how you operate.

Thanks for your help, all of you!
I do have Premiere Pro, but I also want to stay with Vegas.
I can confirm this:
My GoPro files 2 704 x 1 524 25 FPS (PAL) play back 100% realtime in Vegas 11, full HD, best quality.
In Vegas 12 it is just a joke -can't use those files there.
I did try copying the DLL from Vegas11 64 bit to Vegas12 64 bit , as suggested in one of the threads you kindly provided a link to. It did help to some extent, but Vegas 12 always will switch to "half" playback quality, whereas in V11 it plays best quality, full FPS.

I am with John Cline, SCS ought to do something with it. It is a showstopper! Who does NOT use GoPro files these days?
And transcoding.. well, if you have time for it. I need to get stuff done, and am used to placing footage on the timeline, and just edit away. No transcoding here, if it is not part of an intermediate workflow where I have added titles, effects etc.

I am reluctant about upgrading to R13, sorry..

Can you post a sample for download somewhere?
