I'm new to Acid Pro.

I've recorded 4 tracks. I don't see any waveform on any of the tracks. I can playback the tracks and hear it through the headphones.

Tech support said I don't have things setup for recording. I checked everything according to the "Setting up your system for audio recording" document and everything is setup properly.

Why don't I see the waveform on each track?

OK, I seems the waveforms are in fact already there, but the amplitude is so small it's barely noticeable. The only parts that can be seen are easily mistaken for specks on the display.

Is this simply a function of the recording level? Can the waveforms be expanded somehow so they are easier to see?

Select the wave form you want to expand (normalize). While your cursor is on that wave form, right click the mouse. A drop down menu appears on the right side. Select "normalize". That should expand the wave form in the y-axis. I'm using Acid Music Studio 9 and not Pro, but it should work the same way.

But if the recording is that low a level, normalise may bring up the background noise to an unacceptable level.

Best is to record at a decent level - aim for peaks at around -6dB, or even higher if source 'safe'.

Yes, I realize normalization will do that. Normalization is one of the last things I do after editing & mastering is complete. I try to avoid it if possible as any & all processing (digital or analog) creates artifacts.

I just thought there might be way to "re-scale" the waveform in the track without stretching the vertical height of the track or window.

Well, if the waveform is that small then you probably have a signal-to-noise ratio problem already even if you never normalize it. In effect, your listeners will provide their own normalization step by turning up the volume, which also turns up the noise.

It's still best to get more appropriate recording levels to begin with.
