Odd request..Final Cut

I edit in Vegas but the broadcast facility I work with is all Final Cut. I really like the new XAVC HD Intra format since it can now smart render, could someone see if Final Cut can open this file without the need to run it past compressor. I am currently sending EXCAM HD 50 .MFX with no problems (but no smart render, this could knock a lot of time from my workflow)

I rendered a file to XAVC HD Intra.mxf from Vegas 12 but I wasn't able to import it into FCPX 10.1.1 even if I installed XAVC/XDCAM Plug-in for Apple (PDZK-LT2)

I have never used that format before and I am puzzled as to why I cannot import it in FCPX. I will keep you posted if I do succeed an import.

You should be able to use the free avid DNXhd codecs. I render out to 1080P dnx and send my Apple friends the apple version of the codec. both are available free from Avid. I've used it with two editors running FC7, worked great.

There always stuff like cinac too to convert to prores, but it can be a bit of a pain, plus you are rendering twice.

Hi Roy,

I have some serious FCP 7/X tools in my bag-o-tricks (I'm looking at converting from Mac). Could you send me a sample or link to an HD Intra clip so I can give you specific details about the HD Intra stuff in FCP? timj atsign tolisgroup period com.

Same results here but I think I know what the problem might be. FCP X won't import certain files types directly from the file system. They must be in a memory card structure. For example, FCP X will not recognize AVCHD files in my Movie folder, but if I place the entire AVCHD folder structure from my memory card on my drive, they import just fine. It sees the AVCHD folder as a "container".

This may be the same problem. Does anyone know the format of a memory card containing XAVC files? Maybe that will work.

@Johnny

That makes sense. I shoot with an EX1 and while I keep the file structure from every card I record on, I always extract all .mp4 from the BPAV folder into an event folder and drop these onto the Vegas timeline.

But I was never able to import my EX1 .mp4 files into FCPX and I didn't want to rebuild every folder by individually sliding each shot inside each folder.

After much experimentation, I did find a way to rebuild the BPAV folder in order to import my files into FCPX. Therefore, I would format an SD card in my EX1 camera and then use the BPAV folder as a dummy folder. Afterwards, I would copy the dummy BPAV folder on an external drive and copied a 1000 shots at a time inside the CLPR folder inside the BPAV folder on my PC. Then I would start FCPX on my mac and hookup the external drive and FCPX would rebuild the entire folder structure where each event has it's own folder and code name. This workflow was quick and easy.

So the XAVC import might be similar to the XDCAM import process and I believe, but not sure, that your files needed to be on an external drive.

Someone once describe that taking the files out of the memory card folders was like removing the tape from a DV cassette. You would never dream of removing the tape from a cassette so why would you extract the files from a memory card and throw away the container with all of the meta-data. It makes sense when you think about it.

I always archive my entire AVCHD folders from my memory cards and I always import them into a project using Vegas Pro's Device Explorer so that split files get rejoined. Just because you can brute force copy files from a memory card doesn't mean that you should. I much prefer FCP X's way of working with the AVCHD folder of the card as a opaque container much like a DV cassette.

I don't like Vegas Device Explorer because it renames your files and I like to keep the original naming structure. It doesn't bother me either if my files aren't joined, I just group them if required.

But then again FCPX will rename my files on import!
Mind you that you can have the original naming structure show up in the Browser, but the naming is changed in the events folder where the files lies.

Only I have been using this workflow before FCPX was out and the original .mp4 from my EX1 would play in Premiere and AE both on PC and Mac, if required. I believe it is a QuickTime limitation that prevents playing the original .mp4 file from the EX1.

Anyhow I do keep the original BPAV so at any moment I can rebuild the entire folder structure, while every SD card I own is numbered to the matching BPAV folder. So if I do get corrupt footage, I can easily spot the faulty card.
