Vegas Pro Connect ROCKS!!!

I've been playing around with the new Vegas Pro Connect iPad app and it is really impressive. It’s surprisingly very responsive and worked well in my limited testing. You can swipe to skim the timeline and drop markers and get really precise control like a jog/shuttle would give you. There are instructions when you start, the transport looks great, the gesture pad is almost like my Mac trackpad and the timecode readout on top makes it really easy to be precise. This is really a nice addition to editing with Vegas Pro.

I LOVE IT!!! :-D

BTW, I started using it with my right hand but I'm actually using it now with my left hand now where my Shuttle Pro normally is (sorry shuttle).

For those of you without an iPad consider this... I paid $149 for my FaderPort and another $99 for my Shuttle Pro and for that same $250 you can get an iPad mini that does all that and so much more. Dedicated hardware control surfaces are quickly being replaced by virtual surfaces on tablets. These are real exiting times!

What do others who've tried it think?

Sounds great JR - looking forward to the Android version, as are a few others!

Not sure if it's included yet, but I can imagine being able to use touch to control many things, such as audio console faders whilst mixing - very exciting, as you said.

Do you know if any other NLE's are doing this yet?

> "Do you know if any other NLE's are doing this yet?"

No other NLE's that I know of which is why it's so progressive of Sony to be the first. They were first with HD, first with 3D, and now first with tablet support. You've got to admit that they are forward thinking in that regard.

My feeling is that Logic Remote, the free companion app for Logic Pro X and GarageBand, is the standard that apps like this will be held to. It’s free, it’s full featured, it’s beautifully skeuomorphic, it’s a great companion app. I realize that Vegas Pro Windows users will have never seen this but Mac users will expect nothing less (I know I do). ;-) If any of you have a Mac in addition to your iPad, download the free Logic Remote app and check it out with GarageBand which you can also get for free on your Mac. It really enhances the editing experience.

Since Vegas Pro supports MIDI Control Surfaces, you can probably get any MIDI Controller app to work already. Apps like DAW Control look like they can emulate the HUI that Vegas already supports. I haven't tried any of these yet but it's on my list of todo's now that Vegas Pro Connect has sparked my interest.

I just installed Pro Connect on my iPad. Can't wait to try it out with the new version of Vegas.

No personal experience but I've been told FCP X has this.
Heaps of audio desks can be driven from tablets. Years ago I saw the sound guy walk a venue with a tablet while he Eq'ed the hall.

Decades ago company I worked for played with touch screen tech, it's a good solution for dirty industrial environments but elsewhere users want tactile feedback.

I do sound reinforcement for a couple of churches. At one of them we have the soundboard connected wirelessly to an iPad and I can make adjustments from anywhere in the building. We have been doing this for well over a year. I also have an HUI app that let's me do mixer adjustments from my iPad in my home studio. I also know that Adobe Lightroom is allowing users to do RAW photo adjustments on proxies for RAW camera files on an iPad. These are all different than the Sony Vegas implementation though.

Now we can sit in our huge leather chair and control the world like Blofeld! DJ's and DAW users have been using tablet touch interfaces for quite a few years now. The reason goes that it makes it easier to control plugin interfaces and the mixer. Having used one I find it quicker and less constricting using a mouse/keyboard shortcuts and a large desktop screen. They're probably more useful as virtual instrument interfaces for tapping out a beat and then mangling it but again I prefer a remote interface with real knobs, sliders and ribbons. Maybe that virtual on the fly creative editing approach will catch on in Vegas but isn't that niche already catered for with VJ software?

Not sure who will need to control Vegas remotely unless collaborating on a project with others who live far away and can't come to the studio or home base. I'm not certain, but wouldn't those who work on time critical multi-produced projects be using more expensive kit (hardware/software) anyway?

Ok, this seems cool, but I've got three monitors: two LCD & one LCD Touchscreen.

Is there something I'm not seeing to make buttons/etc. larger so they are easier to use on the touch screen? Like the mixer sliders, etc?

I thought maybe it could be an option under external devices like the Vegas Connect, but it's not. :?

Yes, from 3rd party vendors. I had forgotten about. Thanks for reminding me Bob, because I just looked and found that ProCutX is now free and when I first saw it they were charging $24.99 for it! It does require that you run server software on your computer to talk to FPX and that you load a custom FCPX keyboard commands, so it's not as integrated as Sony's solution but it is a very impressive set of functions.

In the current version of the app, once a marker is in the Vegas project, you can no longer delete it from the iPad side. However, you can delete the marker from inside Vegas Pro 13, and then re-run 'File > Prepare for Vegas Pro Connect'. And if you select 'Prepare metadata only' it won't re-render the video, it will simply update the markers. The iPad will then tell you to update your previously synced project.

I realize it's not an ideal workflow if you've synced a marker accidentally, but it's at least possible.

Also, I fully realize there are other, more feature-rich external control apps out there for iPad. However, consider the following:

1) Vegas Pro Connect is the only app that communicates directly with Vegas Pro, which means it doesn't have to translate messages to MIDI controls. It also means we have the ability to expand functionality easily, and send much richer messages (I.e. the project thumbnail images, for example)

2)Very few of the other external control apps have a gesture mode, or at least one that works as well as Vegas Pro Connect's. It's fast, easy to learn, and since tablets don't have any tactile feedback like physical buttons or switches, it provides a way to use your tablet as a real external control device where you don't have to take your eyes off the computer screen.

3) There is no other mobile solution out there that works so well for offline, mobile review as Vegas Pro Connect. No matter if you are a hobbyist who wants to take projects on the go to show and review, a single editor who wants to take or send a project to a client, or a broadcast house with a producer who needs to review and comment on multiple editors' work, the review workflow with Vegas Pro Connect can be very useful.

This is a huge advantage. I just spent some time last night with the ProCutX app for Final Cut Pro X and it is really laggy. When you think about it, there is a server running on your computer that is listening for the app then when it gets a command it needs to relay that to FCPX and I guess I'm just spoiled by the Vegas Pro Connect because there was a definite lag in response with ProCutX and Vegas Pro Connect has no such lag.

"

That was my second issue with ProCutX. I had to keep looking down to find the right button do anything. It definitely wasn't a productivity improvement. With Vegas Pro Connect I keep my eyes on my project and use my iPad much like I do the TouchPad on my Mac to swipe gestures without ever looking. This has a definite productivity advantage.

Kudos to the Sony Development Team. Vegas Pro Connect is extremely responsive and easy to use. I'm looking forward to where you take this in the future because it has a lot of potential.

Just getting started.
I'm not so interested in an external control device as others.
I want to my clients who live overseas to download the app on their ipad and then see my "prepared" Vegas Pro connect video files on their app.

My question is since obviously they are not on the same wifi as me. How do they get the synchronized files (via some cloud server?) If so, how does one access the cloud?

I understand how things work on the wifi network, not off of it.

Eric_SCSDev wrote on 4/22/2014, 8:02 AM
Hi Erik, thanks for your interest.

In the current version of the app, there is no integration with cloud services for syncing. In order to sync between Vegas Pro 13 and Vegas Pro Connect, there must be a direct connection between the two applications.

That being said, there isn't necessarily a requirement that the two be on the same network. If you can have Vegas Pro 13 running on a machine that you can access from outside your local network, then you can give the public IP / hostname to your client and have them set up a connection in Vegas Pro Connect that way. You would simply need to make sure port forwarding is set correctly on your router. Just note that (while connected) they would also be able to go into the 'external control device' mode, which probably wouldn't be a good experience for them due to high latency.

You can disable access for them when you don't want them to sync by simply unchecking 'Options > External Control' at any time.
i am erikd wrote on 4/22/2014, 9:15 AM
Eric,

Very nice of you to take the time to try and help me out. I understand what you are saying but I would need something a bit more elegant if I am going to get my clients involved. They are notorious for being technically challenged I'm afraid. With the whole cloud for camera proxies being offered now in V13, I am surprised that Vegas Pro Connect wasn't given a cloud connection too.

Hope they can work that out because that would be something very useful to me.

Thanks again,

Erik

The further idea can be sending special-compressed "Preview" Package file via popular cloud (dropbox?) and the requirement to open it via client's iPad...

Aside from iPad2, simple cross-platform portable application (no need for having installation process) in order to open the preview package can be a good idea in previewing purposes.
An automatic watermarking for protection can be added...

Finally able to get my iPad2 OS updated to 7.1.1 (from 6.3.1 - huge difference on its' UI style!)

Very interesting :)

But, I wonder one thing when sending preview video to iPad2, the rendering to MP4 is only using CPU. Is it possible to have selection for GPU's assisted rendering?
