Let's face it V13 is just a point upgrade.

I won't list all of the "new" features as you can all read the official list. Once again there is some 3rd party addon that going on past history will be lucky to last 2 full upgrades so these plugins are just distractions to make us think that it is a full upgrade.

The loudness meter - yes is good but for a small amount of money you can buy VST loudness meters that you can use in all VST hosts. Google ""vst loudness meter"" with quotes and you will find over 500 results many for free. There are actually more but they are usually included in master plugins. Some of the more expensive versions like WLM Plus Loudness Meter have more information available for the user.

It seems to me that V13 should not be a major upgrade but an update. It is time to try the Adobe video experience as I already have an Adobe subscription. I realize that both platforms have bugs and I'm not interested in starting a flame war over which is better. However, I look with envy at the After Effects 3rd party plugins and find very few have none or part support only for Vegas. I will try my next project in Adobe while sticking with V12 as I climb the learning curve for Adobe.

Even if Vegas 13 is a point upgrade, Adobe is not an option for me. For my way of working with videos and logic, Adobe is not intuitive for my editing needs.

I have a twin brother (not identical) who considers Adobe to be quite intuitive and Vegas to be quite confusing. For me, it is the other way around.

So it is not an NLE vs. NLE thing but what tool works best for the user thing.

As for both platforms having bugs, that makes a lot of sense considering the seemingly endless numbers of system configurations both platforms have to support.

Some systems are going to be at the 'sweet spot' for each platform and some are going to be towards the outer edges even when two systems look the same.

In my opinion, the biggest bug sits between the chair and the monitor(s). Neither platform can solve that one!

As for the point upgrade thing, I quite agree. More like a point update with a few extras at a reasonable price. Since I do not already have those extras then that would be of some value for me. For those who already have them, then that might be something for them to think about.

Working with .NET 4 framework should make things better under the hood.

So while on the surface the upgrade does not really seem worth it to me, under the hood for the above and other reasons it is.

So I decided to head to the bank, deposit some money and pay for the upgrade. Well, after I put my shoes and socks on.

I will not go with the suite because I do not like SF, Hit Film is not something I need and the royalty free music stuff is usually not what I need as well. The sound effects are not what I need either. Now if we could mix and match for what we do need, that would be great!

Agreed!

For me, Audacity and GoldWave together with Vegas give me all the audio editing power I need. SF seems underpowered in comparison, especially as most of the time I'm either in need of noise reduction or playing about with ultrasonic recordings. For NR GoldWave is superb, and with it's spectral view, Audacity is great for helping me identify the ultrasonic frequencies I've recorded.

Hit Film... I don't work, and have little interest in SFX, so thanks but no thanks, Sony.

As for sound effects, I already have a bunch from a previous SCS purchase, and how often do I use them...?

Anyway, I concur with what Violet's assertion. I'm tempted to look at other NLEs, but Vegas, despite the bugs, still offers the most elegant and efficient way of working. For my humble needs, do I really want the hassle of learning a different editing paradigm?

Well the upside to Adobe's software is that you can use their software for a few months and only be out $50 or so. The downside (currently) is that if they provide minimal or zero useful upgrades in the future, you still have to keep paying them monthly, or the software stops working.

At least with Vegas you CAN skip a version or two if necessary.

I'm still holding out hope that Adobe will eventually reverse their decision and offer both subscribe and perpetual licensing options at the same time.
NormanPCN wrote on 4/19/2014, 11:54 AM
That is what Avid is experimenting with. Both license options.

If it's not worth it don't upgrade.

No need to clutter the forums with opinions.

Even if it is a point upgrade you pay only $150.

Adobe's point upgrades are, what? $360 each year and it's not even optional. Stop paying and you can't open any of your files ever again. And I think $360 is only for those who have already been using one of their CS things, otherwise it's closer to $600. And they can raise prices to whatever they want, whenever they want, which they will once they hook enough people.

I agree that it's one of the most lackluster upgrades to date. That said I still plan on upgrading as long as it proves to be stable. The reason is I want Vegas to continue to survive because it still does so many things better and any editor I've tried.

I also had the chance to speak to some of the Vegas team at NAB and they seemed very responsive and open to suggestions. My hope is that is that they will spend the next year fixing many lingering bugs and getting things like how Vegas handles black levels in line with others in the industry.
Kit wrote on 4/19/2014, 8:27 PM
It's more than $150 dollars, more like $250. Never did get the email but perhaps that''s just as well judging by the comments so far - easier to resist temptation.

Got my v13 upgrade. Seems stable for me so far. But, so did v12. Neither NB Titler Pro nor HitFilm have ever worked for me but, I don't yet see the need to upgrade my setup when Premiere, FCP, and Avid run well on it.

Still runs trial over here...

Updating .Net Framework and all its' security and updates first, via Win Updates.
Install VP13, update Hitfilm.
Open previous recent done VP12 project (4 minute highlights only), play...
3/4 part got crashed...
Rerun again, go to Options>Preferences>Video
Again, Dynamic RAM must be put 0 (zero), and then everything when smooth.

My findings for now...

[Stop paying and you can't open any of your files ever again.] deusx

Let me make it clear Adobe formats can be opened in a number of other products. The statement of stop paying your subscription and you lose your files forever is just not true. Just one of many products Corel Photo Paint for instance will open the current CC PSD format with layers and text. It just does it faster.

Really?

What product can open and edit Illustrator files?

What product opens and edit After Effects projects?

Because I would love to know.

Only a fool or a rich man would agree to Adobe's hostage terms. It is a loosing proposition for everyone else.

Coreldraw opens Illustrator CC files. If I could be bothered there are sure to be a number of translating program if not direct import into 2d and 3d programs used in the industry. One word - Google.

Hello.

I tried the V13 trial on my W7 virtual machine.

There's no french language.
I can use it in english, but I prefer waiting for a french upgrade before buying it.

As soon as a new version of Dvd Architect pro 6, offering 3D menus, will be realeased, I will buy it, without waiting for it's french version !

Is it just a "point upgrade" to be compatible with Dvd Architect pro 6 ?

Regards.

The Adobe subscription process is a complete rip off. Essentially you're buying the software but not owning it. Spending hundreds of dollars on Corel products to open old Adobe projects once you stop paying the subscription is absurd. Seeing as we are film editors and compositors if we used Adobe products then we'd be concerned about After Effects and Premier files. So the Corel cop out is null and void. I wish people wouldn't introduce red herrings in order to justify rip off marketing scams.

Violet you're the one claiming that all Adobe files can be opened in other software so do the research if you want to convince anyone of this. Telling people to "Google" is completely unconvincing.

Where I do agree with you is that VP13 release does seem like an update rather than a new version but then I have no need for Clouds and apps atm. If, as it appears from the flurry of posts about problems with VP13, that these new features have been developed at the expense of fixing old bugs then Sony is not inspiring confidence in long term users who keep buying the new versions. They need to get the balance right between innovating and improving what already exists.
Lovelight wrote on 4/20/2014, 12:40 PM
Opinions are feedback for Sony. Fact.

Opinions about other opinions are ... You all know the answer, useless.

I agree whole heartedly.

This feels like a point upgrade.
Kit wrote on 4/20/2014, 7:23 PM
Saying that fixing bugs is "improving what already exists" is way too charitable. It's fixing what should have been working in the first place.
flyingski wrote on 4/20/2014, 10:40 PM
A long time ago I was a paid Pinnacle beta tester and by that I mean I paid money for their retail program and then we all sorted out the bugs. I'd already played with avid and adobe and found them lacking. Then this Vegas thing came along and I was in heaven. Now I'm beginning to smell that old Pinnacle odor again and can't decide if it's real or imagined. To paraphrase one of Grazie's countrymen," Vegas is the worst system in the world, except for all the others", so I'll probably keep buying the upgrades. That's because I have the hook in my mouth and can't shake it off.

So you complain about paying $150 for a Vegas upgrade, but are perfectly happy to pay hundreds for Adobe's updates and also pay hundreds for Corel software just to possibly be able to open future versions of some of your files, and we are not even talking about actual editing files/projects just images and illustrations.

Yes, that makes a lot of sense.

Try opening a future complex premiere project in other programs. Good luck. I was actually starting to warm up to Premiere with CS6 and then they pulled the "let's keep you in creative handcuffs for the rest of your life" garbage.
farss wrote on 4/21/2014, 12:51 AM
Why are you in handcuffs for the rest of your life?

If you're in the business you have paying customers and if you're not you're not.
All seems simple enough to me plus I'm told I could have had Ppro CS6 for $10 / month which is cheaper than what Vegas has cost me. On top of that I've paid for V11 and V12 and never used them, I paid for the upgrades as rental because I keep using V9 mostly.

Perhaps the other thing easily overlooked is there's been one time when I really could have used InDesign but no way could I justify buying it. Renting for a month or two, yes. I also have to wonder what's going to happen if SCS go down the rental path as well. I see no reason why they wouldn't and it might help their bottom line given how popular Vegas is with the pirates.

Not only that but if years down the track a client comes back wanting some changes done and you're out of the business but still feel obliged to help, hopefully for money, you just either join up again or edit the rendered files. 99% of the time I never bother going back to old projects as it's either a basic add a bit or take a bit out. Even if as some have suggested you're stuck with Illustrator files they can be saved as one file per layer or as a PDF which means you can open them pretty easily, been there, done that between me and a graphic artist.

Bob.
Grazie wrote on 4/21/2014, 1:07 AM
Bob, you make a well argued business case. I've been reading our chum's post as being held in "creative" handcuffs and assumed that meant that the options in Vegas for creativity - meaning working ideas IN to a project are more attainable within Vegas than PP - and consequently being held to the monthly usage plan would be counter to this.

But your business case is well founded in the realities of the commercial world.

Grazie
