Sorry for a question about what should probably be obvious to me, but I am using SF8 and want to record what's playing on my computer from Mixx directly to file. When I click on the record button I get the msg that no device exists. I don't want any external device, I want to record what's playing on my computer.

If not present on your soundcard mixer, then you'll need something like VAC (Virtual Audio Cable).

Thanks, all I see is two Microphone options and a Line In option that say Not plugged in. I did figure out that I can just record within Mixx, though I would still like to be able to record anything playing on my computer without needing additional software.

I use a program called "All Sound Recorder Vista" on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.

Don't let the name "Vista" confuse you.

It is a standalone program the saves an audio file to several formats.

I then read that file into Sound Forge Pro.

Some PC cards have an option to record 'What you hear', 'Stereo output' or whatever the card makers' terminology used. The has been discussed in-depth, so search this forum for the relevant posts.
If it's not possible to patch the card's output directly to the record input, the previously mentioned apps can be used.

Go into the Control panel, select Sound, and make sure that in the recording tab you have your sound card line selected. Then do Control N and hit the record button. Then you'll have an Arm option which begins the recording. You should be able to record what you hear on your computer.

Audacity has this built in. It's called Loopback.

For the life of me, I can understand why an open source product can implement this feature and Sound Forge cannot implement for decades?

It is long overdue for Sound Forge to implement such a feature. Of course, no one at Sony cares or pays attention.

Just today I learned "how" to do this in Win7-64 using SF10. At the moment, it works with the 2 systems I have--both using onboard sound, a Realtek HD chip. First, you need to open your Recording Devices box, where it lists what input devices are currently connected (mic, line in, etc.). Here's the key. Right-click on a blank space in the windows and check "show disabled devices" as well as "show disconnected devices". Up pops an input called "Stereo Mix". Set this as your default. Then open SF and record as normal. You can set the recording level of the Stereo Mix if you select the properties box. Won't guarantee it, but it works for me. Good luck.

Incidentally, I have verified that it works for both stuff that I can "play" such as a music file on my computer or music "streamed" from online sources.

Pretty sure that is dependant on your audio interface. One shows for my on-board 'Realtek', but nothing for my MOTU or Presonus devices. Though the Presonus does have this functionality explicitly in it's applet.

I use All Sound Recorder.
What works for anyone depends on computer brand, soundcard drivers, and OS.
I also found a very old Realtek driver that supports direct recording on my Vaio. But there are a few quirks with the drivers themselves.

Same here with my internet PC, a Dell Studio 540 running Vista home prem., which has a "Realtek High Definition Audio" card. The "Stereo Mix" must be selected in the card's 'Record' parameters. I don't recall exactly but there were some other 'odd' settings as well. However I did detail the settings on this forum a few years ago as this issue comes up frequently. Of course it depends on one's OS, settings and sound card.

Realtek Vista_R166 driver works for direct recording; however, there is a bug where plugging in a headphone does not disconnect the onboard speakers. I believe those drivers were 2007.

"All Sound Recorder" is handy, and does not require changing drivers.

Works for me in both FF and IE with the normal open or save options.
I have not tried installing it though since I don't need it.

I have no earthly memory from where I downloaded it; It "is" a 2007 XP/Vista 32 driver, and of course it has been discontinued!

I have been using it for several months on Win 7 Pro 64-bit with no problems. I have recorded from IE and cassette tape.

The program is about 3 years old. I purchased the "Power Pack".
