Subject:AudioStudio 10: Setting recording levels real time

Is there any way to control master input levels from within Audio Studio while recording from a mixer during a live performance?

If I try and adjust the levels using the master faders on my mixer, it affects the volume of sound going to the amplifier and speakers, which I don't want.

Currently, I have to open "recording devices", select the device in use, click "Advanced", pick the "Levels" tab, and then carefully adjust the level slider. Extremely cumbersome, and way too slow for instantaneous tweaks.

Any help and suggestions greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Nope. You're already doing it the way it has to be done.

Does your mixer have a separate "record out"? Often these have a separate volume control that doesn't affect the main out. You could also accomplish this by recording from a separate sub, a monitor, or an aux output. I never record from the same output that goes to the house.

Riding gains on house audio is common practice -- on recordings it is ill-advised. Send your prefade audio to your recorder (SF) at a level you have determined to be safe. Setting a mild limiter (not AGC) will make this easier. Postfade goes to the house, where you can ride gains to your heart's desire.

A live event is not going to have the dynamic range to exceed your recording capabilities or require jockeying gains. Hopefully relative levels are reasonable and you are working with a capable designer.

As MV stated, a pre-fader auxiliary send is probably your best option.
However.. when I had a long time client who held regular professional law seminars in hotel ballrooms, my prefered M.O. was to put all the mics through my mixer and send pre-fader mix to the 'house' PA and use the linear faders for the record mix. This gave me complete control of the SR system as well. However this would be with an otherwise unmanned mixer and would not be recommended for the inexperienced. Furthermore, a rapport with the house A/V dept would be wanted.
