Sony changed license terms??

Steve Mann wrote on 3/7/2014, 2:01 PM
So, here I am boasting of the Sony "use it only on one computer at a time" provision in the license when John Rofrano points me to the NEW license terms that takes that away.

It is not uncommon to have the program loaded on a PC at home and a PC at work using the same license, since only one would be used at a time. (Or a desktop in the studio plus a laptop to take with you for a client visit).

The current End User License Agreement states:

"Sony grants you a limited license to use the Software only on one (1) computer or mobile device, as applicable, and you may create one (1) back up copy of the Software. "

Am I reading the wrong license or is Sony planning to screw us and not allow multiple installations using only one at a time?

The wording you recall was created during a period of loose-lip regulation by the software industry lawyers. For years, this was largely overlooked and forgotten. Now in the age of clamp-down on the squeeze of losing profit margin - the lawyer community organized efforts on their behalf to see how they could contribute to the newer initiatives.

There are thousands more illegal versions of SCS software outthere than the Premiere, Avid, Apple FCP camps combined. That's what make it popular among the largest population.

This was already in the EULA of my Vegas Pro 11.

So is the "back up copy of the software", the version we all use on our laptops?
One desktop and one laptop per licence.
If they are now trying to say that we need to buy another lic for a second machine it is a joke.
Even Cineform with their archaic licensing system allows 2 machines per licence.

Yea, I found it quite an odd change. Most professional software I own allows at least 2 copies be installed and most professionals I know have at least 2 computers so I was shocked when I read that the license agreement had changed to be so restrictive. I figured it was to keep the lawyers happy because at least Sony trusts it's customer, unlike Adobe who locks it down with activation and monitors it every month.

I use to never use to like dongles, but i bought some Waves plug-ins that use a USB key and I can install them on my PC, Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, etc. and there are no restrictions to how many systems they will install on. As long as I have my USB key I can use them on any of my computers. I'm starting to really like that freedom. (...until I forget my USB key and then I remember why I hated dongles) ;-)

How does " ... use the Software only on one (1) computer or mobile device, as applicable, " restrict one from using it on multiple devices as long as only one device is being used at any given time...

It doesn't say you cannot ' install ' it on multiple devices.

The first time I ever heard of Sony Vegas Pro was when I stumbled across a YouTube video showing how to steal it.

I couldn't believe it would actually be that easy, from a big company like Sony. So I tried it, and voila, in about ten minutes I had a fully functional working copy of Vegas.

That is where they should focus their efforts, the easy as pie pirating of their software, not restricting their paying customers.

Yeah, I bought it, so shutup.

If SCS goes the way of Adobe I'll invest the time learning the Blender NLE. Seriously, I will. Being a popularity wise tiny NLE compared to Premiere, SCS can't do something that restrictive w/o killing their user base.

Anyway... right from the SCS knowledge base: here

Their current EULA still fits under that description. It says "use" not "install". You've always been only able to use one copy at a time.

I am not supporting stealing SW BUT ..... to Continue what Barry said...

about 10+ years ago when I wanted to get an NLE - I chose the one I was was to steal easiest and that did not crash.

It was Vegas ...
I then went on to Studio and Pro and they have since gotten a lot of money from me -once I was sure the product was right for me.

Reviving an old thread...
I need to show a client the progress on our project, and in prior versions of Vegas it was no problem to have it installed on a laptop to take to the client. It appears that the new EULA specifically prohibits this, and I can't use an older version already installed on the laptop because I started the project in V13.

So, what to do? I can't afford another license just for occasional use on my laptop.

You revived and old thread and the answer is two posts above yours. :)

There is something to be said for the approach taken by NewBlue. You can install say NBT on as many devices as you wish. The proviso being that only one installation can be active at any one time. ie you can deactivate as well as activate. You would just need to ensure you have a copy of the activation code on both the office laptop. G/V Edius used this approach but now limit the number of deactivations to two.

Does either VP 'phone home? It's simply gown to trust.

If after installing Vegas on the desktop and then installing it on the laptop and it does not activate. You can call customer service and ask them to reset your software.

I have does this in the past due to computer crashes where I had limited out the installs. They were happy to does. Matter of fact one CS person stayed on the phone to make sure it installed and got activated.
