When i first got my computer a year ago it was really fast. Audio worked really nicley and the whole system was fast. Now, the whole computer is SO SLOW and it skips when i record and playback in acid and other programs. I have also noticed that under the close prog window (ctrl+alt+del) i have programs such as delayrun , loadqm , bargians, dssagent and other progs when i end them they say not responding

My Computer is a HP Pavilion 8000 series with (8705)
Pentium III running at 800mhz
has 128mb of SDRAM (i put another 256 in but it didnt work)
Windows ME
SoundBlaster AudioPCI (yes i know, i'm getting audiophile 2496)
30 gig h drive w/ 13mb left

thanks so much -XS

Let's see ... i don't have ME running on any of my machines anymore.
We "upgraded" the ME machines to 98SE ;) ... so i can't check this out
directly for you, but it should be about the same on ME.

Some of those extra programs may be launched in the startup group.
Go to Start, Programs, StartUp. You can delete any entries you find in
there that don't seem absolutely essential to you.

Another place to look is Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools,
System Information, Tools, System Configuration, Startup (*whew*).
Lots of extra added startup items get added there. You can uncheck
them and the next time you boot they won't be running anymore.
Generally the only things you should have running in the background on
your computer are Explorer and Systray (and maybe an antivirus program
if you're online, but even that can be turned off if you need more speed.)
I know HPs tend to come with tons of accessory tools preinstalled, most
of them for arcane HP functions that you'll probably never use.

When is the last time you defragged your hard drive? If this gets badly
fragmented it can slow down audio editing a lot.

Hello,

Defrag your hard drives every week, And check out a program called Norton Utilities, It will help to clean up your system, and it defrags really good too. Just don't run all the Clean Sweep programs. Also If your going to run the System Doctor when Windows runs, which is what I do, then get yourself another 128 Meg. RAM stick. Also doing the things that a prev. post said about diabling startup items, You need to be carefull with that because alot of those items are needed on startup.

See ya, Rockit

I would also recommend a program called 'EnditAll' which can be found for free at ZDnet.com, just search thru the utlilities section until you find it, it's well worth while. What it does is cut off all active programs that you have running in the background and allows all your processing power to be used for Acid, or what ever program you're wanting to run. It will automatically cut off everything except for systray and explorer, which should never be cut off for any reason by the way.
Also how are you saving your files after you work with them? Are you saving them as 'embedded' which puts all of the loops and samples that you were using and stores them in a single file and takes the load off of your main Acid program.
But the previous post were correct in defraging your system, but one thing to remember is to make sure that you turn off your screensaver when you defrage, as it will cause the defrage to restart everytime your screensaver kicks in. Hope this helps and good luck, be sure to let us know how it turns out, and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
