Subject:An error occurred while saving one or more files

In sound forge 10 I'm getting a message every time I try to save a file. "An error occurred while saving one or more files. The file could not be opened because some other application already has it open"

Nothing has anything open. What's happening?

I can't help directly .. but I would suggest to do a "save as" with a slightly different file name .. then quit SF and see if you can delete the original file manually.

That didn't help. I've tried highlighting everything first, then I've tried copying and moving to a new file, then cutting and moving to a new file. Everything I can think of. I don't know how to figure out what he problem is.

Any other thoughts? This is driving me crazy. I just tried to extract 24 tracks and was successful with only 6. I can't have this.

Check for other A/V app.s running in the background. Ctrl+Alt+Delete> Task Manager"
For instance, QT will initiate in start-up unless told not to. "Run> msconfig> Start-up".
Norton's security app.s are know to cause problems as well.

Perhaps you could elaborate on the file type, the file location, whether the read-only attribute is set, and what you mean by "extract".

The file type is .wav;
the file location is whatever the SoundForge default is when you are in the process of recording, (\AppData\Local\Sony\Sound Forge Pro\10.0\);
open as Read Only is not checked;
and I mean using the "extract regions" command.

This comes up a lot for me because I am archiving some LPs. I record the whole thing, go back and add markers, convert the markers to regions, then push "extract regions" to split the tracks. (This is how I have always done it. If there is an easier way, please let me know).

So, it's driving me crazy that I keep getting this error doing the extracting.

First thing to try, and not just for this problem but because in the long and short runs it will make your life worlds better, is changing the save location. Create a new folder in some nice, simple, sane location, like C:\album_recordings\album_name (or better yet use a different hard drive if you have one). Try extracting/saving to that location instead.

Didn't solve the problem, but, what was I thinking??? I changed it immediately so I can have better access. Thank you for the advice.

Back to the problem at hand, anyone else have any ideas?

I've had this problem when opening files in Sound Forge 10 from Acid 7 and sometimes Vegas 12. Using Windows 7 64 bit. It is really annoying and I wish I had a solution

I've gotten this error since I can remember at various times, tho not necessarily while extracting, etc., that the OP mentions, just random times trying to save the file I'm editing. For me, usually, but not always, just saving again after a bit works. I don't think that is working in the cases mentioned here.

Most of the time, I never see a reason for the error, but here are several things to check or try:

This can sometimes happen if windows explorer has the file selected, which enables the preview in some explorer configurations, and will lock the file.

You might try running Sound Forge as an administrator. On the application icon, or in the program list, right click and select "Run as administrator." This may elevate your rights over the file. If that works, and you want to run the program as administrator always, you can right click, select the properties, select the Compatibility tab, then tick the check box under Privilege Level.

Hope that helps

I also get this same error, particularly after working on several files in a single Sound Forge 11 session. In my case, I discovered that the file that had the error upon saving did, in fact, get saved to the disk - but couldn't be reopened for editing. When SF is in this state I also found that it is actually unable to open files at all. I was stuck with unsaved files, so, I went through the motions of saving each file and OK'ing the error each time. I closed SF, re-opened it, opened the files I'd just saved and all returned to normal. This problem has recurred several times recently.

In summary, my suggestion is try to save the files, OK the error each time, close SF down and go see if the saved files are there as you hoped. In my case, they were. I suspect the error is occurring as the file reopens for editing after the save.

I had the same error with files extracted from CD. The error went away when I removed an empty space to the left of the Track Number attribute (in the Summary Information Metadata) and an apparent tab character at the end of it.

I'm having exactly the same problem with both SF10 Pro and SF11 Pro... i.e. "An error occurred saving one or more files." etc.

SF is running with elevated privileges and there's no other software on my workstation having any problems BUT Sound Forge!

It seems that this problem's been around for quite a while.

How about some solution, SONY!!! We paid you a good money, no? What do we got in retunr?

I just ran into a slightly different version of the error "file not found. Make sure the file exists..." but I used Doug Marshall's post of 1/11/2014 as the remedy and it worked. I saved my file and when the error occurred, I OK'd the error message, closed out of SF (I'm using SF 10), restarted SF, opened my file from the FILE tab (it was in the folder I had tried saving it to) and BINGO...it was there. It seemed as if it saved the file (I was saving as MP3), but it couldn't make an SFK file (build the peaks). After I restarted SF, it built the peaks just fine and now there is an SFK file with it. Hope this helps.

Same here and it's driving me nuts. Running 11 (Build 299). The annoying bit is that I'm fairly sure I did not encounter any such problem during the trial period, but after the purchase I haven't had a single session without this bug.

For me the software works fine for a while, but inevitably, on saving, I start to get ;

"Warning: An Error Occurred while saving one or more files.
The file could not be opened. Make sure the file exists and that you have access to the file/folder."

The files are saved, but I get this nag pop-up and I cannot open new files. All I can do is to save everything, restart Sound Forge and get back to work. Until I have to do it again. Some workflow that :(

Few notes that could possibly help in hunting down the bug;

1) No, it's not 'other software' doing this; I've tried this with and without anti-virus software. No effect to anything.

2) Run as Admin does nothing. Well, it does slow down your workflow, since you can no longer open files with Explorer's context menu and have to hunt them down with Sound Forge's Load-browser instead, thus giving the illusion it takes longer for the bug to raise it's head.

3) I've even set up folder permissions manually so that every folder Sound Forge should access (temp folder, source folders, destinations, program folder itself) so that everyone has full access, but that hasn't helped.

4) One thing I haven't tried is to turn ALL safety features of Windows (8.1 x64) completely off, but I'd prefer not to turn my PC into a security problem magnet just to run my audio software.

Does the drive you are saving the file to have file write caching enabled? That might cause problems like this, because the file is being written in the background at the same time the app is trying to open the file.

Perhaps this link will help, worth a shot to investigate further:

I'm seeing reports of performance problems if file write caching is disabled. YMMV.

Files should be getting saved with FILE_FLAG_WRITE_THROUGH specified through the write call. This ensures the data has been written to disk before the call returns. I think this really only needs to be done on the last chunk of data written, for better performance. Perhaps ForumAdmin or Peter can verify.

you usually get this when the audio your working on is in use by another program. when I'm using VLC to listen to a mix that I also have open in SF... it won't save and other issues can occur such as work being lost in SF because of the inability to save the file. First, you must close the other programs.

When this (occasionally) happens to me, I 'save as' and amend the file name with "_new " or other ID.
