Hi guys, I was looking through the features list of Sound Forge 11 and saw it finally has multi-track editing. On the feaures page where i saw this it was stated in this way

"Open, edit, and save multichannel audio data from XDCAM™, field recorders, and surround mixes, with sample accurate precision."

Does this mean I can only edit multi track files if i use this recorder?
It seems like an incredibly odd thing to put into a description if it doesn't have any relevance.

If anyone has actually used 11 your input would be greatly appreciated before I drop $200 on the upgrade. Currently I am having to use Reaper and Audacity for my multi-track jobs (editing several segments of my recordings), so it would be nice to have it all in one.

Sound Forge 11 has multichannel editing. Not multitrack.

It remains a single-track editor. So if you're mixing several music or other audio sources, it's probably not the best tool for you. (Acid Pro is a much better choice.)

You can pan between channels, including 5.1 audio. But, again, that's multichannel, ,not multitrack editing.

As Steve stated, Sound Forge Pro is multi-CHANNEL, not multi-TRACK. (which allows overdubbing.. (playing along with, and recording additional track(s). Acid Pro and Vegas are multi-track and can do this. Personally I prefer the Vegas GUI and I have little need for looping. Having video capabilities is a huge bonus.
That said, Audacity is multi-track and is a basic FREE multi-track application. Doesn't have all the features and plug-ins of the SCS Pro apps, but it works. SF Pro does come bundled with some very impressive and useful plug-ins that will work with the other SCS apps.. some of which can also be used in other programs that support Direct X and VST. There's also a lot of freeware effects and processing plug-ins available as well.

I've read some reviews of Sound Forge, and Sony's web pages about it.

Could someone explain how a channel is different than a track? I've used Cakewalk' Sonar, which is multi-track. What is a channel? Is that like a clip on a track?

Is soundforge basically a clip editor?

I don't understand how Soundforge could support 5.1 but not be multi-track.

You can edit the waveform on mono, or mutli-channel media files. It is a precision/surgical waveform editor - not a DAW for mixing.

You cannot mix, chop up, move events around, etc as you can in a DAW. We'll, not easily at least - incredibly laborious !

A bit like a word-processor is not a desktop-publishing application.
