Hi - Question; I have a SB Platinum (yeah, great for gaming but pretty week for pro audio). So I did some research and got the Audiophile 2496, just for recording in Acid Pro 3.0. What's the best way to configure the 2496, and how do I set it up in Acid to use just that card, not the SB?

Windows ME
PIII 866eb coppermine flipchip
Abit VH6-II PC133 motherboard
512 MB PC133 RAM
Quantum Fireball 20.G 7200rpm hard drive
Quantum Fireball 10.2G 5400rpm hard drive
Voodoo 5500 AGP video card
HP 8210 CDR/W

Hello,

Well first you install it and hope for no IRQ conflicts. Then in the options you can select the Audiophile to be the Main card, but the Sound Blaster will still show up, just don't use it. you can select each buss to have either card once you have more than one card installed. But that's pretty much all there is to it, nothing complicated.

Rockit-
Thanks for the quick response. Ok, I checked the system for conflicts and there weren't any. I was able to record a couple of measures to test it, and it recorded ok (I have RCA L/R coming out of my Boss ME-33 into the RCA of the Audiophile; nothing is going into the SB right now). But when I'm in options, only the "Microsoft Sound Mapper" appears. I went to the "advanced" tab and selected the Audiophile (if you could tell me which to select I'd appreciate it) -- but after I hit "OK", ACID still insists on only displaying "Microsoft Sound Mapper". Is the Audiophile working, and I just don't realize it? The other thing is that, in the record box I pushed up the sample rate from 16 to 24/96, and when I tried to save it ACID came back with an error message saying "Selected media type not supported" -- so I went into "details" and sure enough, it said the selected device was "Microsoft Sound Mapper". Is this just a matter of changing the bus for the track? And just so you know, I downloaded the ACID Pro 3.0e update, and I'll install it tonight.
Anyway, thanks in advance for the help!

Hello,

Change the sound mapper to classic wave driver then this will open up a new drop down list option below that one where your sound cards can be selected.

Again, thanks for the quick response. Sounds too easy, I'll have to try that tonight.

Rockit - OK, I tried what you said and it worked, I was able to record and playback through the Audiophile, (at 24/96). BUT there was a very annoying buzz during playback. What's the deal w/ the Audiophile card? I had the levels up as high as I could, because when they were lower I could barely hear the guitar, and the monitor bar wasn't even close to the red zone. I think the increase in gain on the card picked up a lot of background noise. Will you please tell me what the correct setting on the card should be? Or should I increase the volume on the Boss ME-33?
Thanks again, I know I'm close to getting this right.

Hello,

How does the BOSS connect? Is it through MIDI or Line In? Also are you using a external Mixing Board?

I'm going direct: 2 of those Monster cables (1/4" to RCA) out of the ME-33 to the RCA in on the Audiophile.
I was told Monster's one of the best as far as noise goes. I know direct is not ideal, I intend to get a Behringer mixer like maybe the Eurorack MX802A, I have a Peavey KB-60 I can mic to the mixer. Not yet, though. Have you heard anything about those mixers?

I have a Digitech GNX2 guitar effects processor going directly into my Audiophile via S/PDIF. Since the signal was relatively weak volume-wise (it was just beneath the yellow area in the mixer), I adjusted the digital level in the GNX2 to a higher setting. Works great now.

hELLO,

Yeah I use that exact mixer It's a good one. As far as the Audiophile inputs, I used to get noise as well but I can't remember what I did to fix it. I think I updated the drivers and it took care of some of it, but it was also a combination of other things I had connected to the mixer. I would make sure you turn down all the SB Live input volume knobs on the Live drive, I got alot of noise from My SB Live Mic in on the live drive.
Once I eliminated the SB Live and went with the DIO 2496 and the Audiophile the noise went away completely.
But then I had a little trouble playing some games.
But the Audiophile works with most games.

Hello,

The Audiophile is not Fully DirectX compliant, So it works on most games but there is some games it won't work on. But it's great for sound.
If I was going to build a computer for Sound and Games, I would use a SB Live and an Audiophile, If I had to choose one or another, I would choose the Audiophile. But your setup and needs will be different than mine so, It comes down to what you want, Both of the cards are excellent.

To add to what Rockit said, be aware the Audigy can playback at 24-bit but cannot record at 24-bit. The Audiophile can both playback and record at those rates. Just so you know...

Firstoff thanks to all for joining me in this forum.

Here's the deal: I can record beautifully w/ the Audiophile, no more buzz. I can playback the recording and preview loops in the ACID explorer. BUT I can't hear the guitar at the same time (I can see the levels though when I play). It's either/or; here's my setttings:

ACID: "Preview - Wavout 1/2 Delta A-P"; "Master" is set the same.

Audiophile: Under "Patchbay/Router" tab "H/W Out 1/2" -the "H/W Out 1/2" the guitar plays through as expected, the monitor in ACID shows levels as expected, but when I select any of the other 4 switches (Wavout, Monitor Mixer, etc) there is no sound.

Now only when I select "Wavout 1/2" under "Patchbay/Router" tab does the recording playback, and loops from the ACID explorer playback.

The only other menu I have available is H/W Out S/PDIF, but switching those buttons doesn't seem to make a difference. That's puzzling because I'm not using the SPDIF (I'm using the RCA ins on the card and the RCA outs on the card).

Also, when at the Monitor Mixer tab, the "H/W In 1/2" shows my guitar signal, but when I move the volume sliders, it doesn't make any difference. Same w/ the "Master Volume". When I playback the ACID recording, the levels do appear under "WavOut 1/2" in the "Monitor Mixer" tab. But mocving the slider doesn't effect the volume any.

How do I set this up so I can record and play at the same time? Any hints please?
Thanks again.

Hello,

The Patch Bay Router tab is used to route your outputs. The setting of Wave out will give you output from all Windows Programs, Setting it Directly to the inputs will only give you an output of whatever your putting in, Setting it to Monitor Mixer will give you a combination of all inputs from both Programs and Hardware Inputs to your outputs, So Monitor Mixer is what you want to select if you want to hear everything while recording. Remember though some programs wont let you hear what your recording, and be sure that all the signals you're using are of compatable bit rates, or you may not hear everything. I would keep the settings at 44.100 and 16bit for now untill you get used to the card and it's settings, and how different programs work with the card.
The Midiman website has some good tutorals and diagrams of how to do different setups with the card, And they even tell you how to do alot of programs with the card, Like Vegas, and some Cakewalk software. check it out, it'll help you out alot.

Alright, here's the update: it works! I put the Audiophile on "Monitor Mixer" and it records nicely at 24/96. At first, I was able to play through and it sounded fine (much nicer than the SB Live Platinum), but playback of the recorded loop revealed a real annoying buzz. So I fiddled w/ levels and it turns out the signal from the ME-33 was too hot - I had to turn down the master volume and the buzz was gone. The other thing was I found there is a "Line Out/Amp" toggle on the ME-33 that lets me switch between a line-level ouput (for recording), or a hotter signal for an amplifier. The only thing is that the recorded loop is pretty low (I have the "H/W In 1/2" -- the line that shows the guitar monitor -- slider up to about 3/4 to max). But I can't turn the volume up any higher on the ME-33 w/out getting buzz. I just have some more tweaking to do, at least it works. Any more suggestions are always welcome,
thanks.

Hello,

You can turn the Sound card mixer up all the way because it can't clip, only the signal coming in can clip, but the Audiophile won't clip.

Thanks for all your responses. I did solve
my problem,(at least it's a workaround). I increased the compression on the Boss ME-33 as little as I could (I don't like to use compression if I don't have to) - just enough to make the buzz go away. This seems to give me a clear signal but, I think it's inversely proportional -- when I increase the master volume on the ME-33, I have to lower the compresion threshold, the trick is to get those levels just right; get the volume at a point where it's at a usable level, and get the compresion so that it cuts the buzz but doesn't discolor the tone (I am using a new Ibanez XG220B guitar, just so you know). So I don't think I have any hardware issues w/ the Audiophile, but any
other suggestions would be great.
Thanks again,
B
