Subject:Some new wish list items

Since a new version of SF for mac was just announced, I'll ask for a couple of items for the next version of SF for Windows. I know there was a thread opened on this but it is a year old and I'm not sure anyone reads most of it, so I started a new one. I know some of these issues have already been brought up so I'll add my name to the requesters:

1) Envelopes. Rename the "fade" function to "fade/volume envelope", which it really is. Increase the selectable maximum gain to at least 20 dB, possibly more. Make it possible in one application of the tool to have different graphs for the left and right channels (Why, restoration of material with per-channel dropouts, oops, who pushed the 20 db pad button on one channel in the middle of the take..., also for fixing dubs of old cassettes with warped tape where the channels alternately fade as the spools of the cassette turn, often at the beginning of the cassette.)

2) More envelopes, the ability to make a graphic wet\dry gain envelope, on an individual channel, preferably different graphs for each channel in one pass, particularly on EQ. Needed especially for the warped tape repair discussed above, as the HF gets lost when the tape looses head contact.

3) A envelope controlled (wet/dry envelope) Channel Converter, to replace a "dropped out" channel in part and be able to fade in and out of the channel converter. Again for restoration.

I know some of this can be done by copying the file or parts of it and using the powerful "events" crossfades, but that is much more time consuming and prone to error than the simple addition to the above tools.

4) The extract regions function should have an option to insert the region name(s) as the metadata "name/title" of the new file(s) and to copy the "artist", etc. metadata from the source file. Many of my files are from live recordings or transfers of old record albums. I used to name the regions with the cut names and then use the option in CD Architect to make tracks from the regions in the source file, with the track names being automatically copied from the the region names. Quick and accurate. Now, in the mostly post-CD era, I need digital files, MP3, FLAC, WAV, or whatever on a track by track basis. The extract function does this nicely as far as the audio goes, but the metadata gets lost, and it is a time-consuming pain to put it all back in on a file-by-file basis.

Rather than add to the "Extract" tool for this, you might consider adding this capability to the CD burning part of Forge and CD Architect, to instead of, or in addition to burning a CD or creating a CD image, to create individual track files with all the appropriate metadata. It would be really nifty if it could create more than one file type in a pass, if the user could select multiple file types in a single pass, such as MP3, FLAC, WAV, etc. The only other fly is file naming. Look at how Itunes, etc want file names, cut number (not necessarily in region order) followed by artist name followed by track name, with dashes in between. Example: "06 - William Cepeda - Quasi Plena.m4a"

5) In both Forge and CD architect, the ability to save image files both for submission to a replicator and to burn more copies from (days, weeks, or years later) without waiting for the program to render an image every time.

6) Again in both Forge and CD Architect, the ability to burn on multiple burners at the same time and to verify the burn against the image (very important!) Or if you don't want to spend time re-inventing the wheel, make an image file that Nero can read, and I'll use that to actually burn CD's. I still prefer CD architect to prepare the image file, for use by Nero or an improved CD architect.

Enough for now.
