Subject:Will there be a 3.0b fixed version of ACID as for Sound Forge?
Posted by: jlourau

The 3rd-party plug-in bug that crashed when "importing"
plug-ins in Sound Forge and that was also appearing in Acid
3.0 doesn't seem to have been fixed even in the latest
build of Acid 3.0. As other users, I get (with the build
189 version) the same bug of fatal exception during a very
slow directX plug-in scan as in the buggy version of Sound
Forge 5.0. The corrected process (in Sound Forge 5.0b) is
ten times faster and doesn't crash. A side-effect of this
bug is that after the plug-in scan crash, ACID runs
correctly, you can play the demo song for instance, but
once you try to create a bus with a plug-in effect or to
insert an assignable FX, the list of the plug-ins is empty!
So my question is, does Sonic Foundry intend to release a
ACID 3.0b version, as well as for Sound Forge.

I'm very sad to see that Sonic Foundry won't do anything to
solve the third-party plug-ins problem the same way as they
did with Sound Forge...

What Plugins are you talking about?
Waves?
Cakewalk?
Hyperprism DX
Izotope?
RBC?
TC?
Timeworks?

I don't know.
Sonic Foundry has recognized the issue for Sound Forge as
being a "third-party plug-in" bug, that's one of the
reasons why they made a second release of Sound Forge
(5.0b). This bug makes the plug-in scan crash when booting
the program, thus giving an empty plug-in list (in Acid as
well as in Sound Forge). But there is no "3.0b" version for
Acid. I've tried to uninstall half of my plug-ins, but I
couldn't find the time to uninstall them all, and I
couldn't find which one the plug-ins was the problem. All I
know is that it's not my fault, because the new version of
Sound Forge was working 100% perfect! Sonic Foundry, please
port the 5.0b programming code correction to Acid!

Please let me know what plug-ins you are using so we are able to look into this.

And, yes, there will be a 3.0b- it's in the works already.

Thanks.

Thank you for your answer Jenn!

I hope that you or someone else from Sonic Foundry will take the time to read all the stuff that took me time to write. Even if a plug-in bug can be caused by an unproper or badly coded plug-in, this is usual, so the program should remain stable, unless the user willingly loads the plug-in effect for use in a song.

SONIC FOUNDRY HELP ME! READ BELOW MY LIVE BUG-CHASING EXPERIENCE...

Before I give you the list of my plug-ins which is quite long, I'm just thinking that normally if the 5.0b version of Sound Forge finally worked on my computer with my plug-ins, that may mean that you already found where the problem was and found a way to make it work.

Here is the error message I had everytime I launched Sound Forge 5.0, during the plug-in scanning process (translated in english for you):

An exception has occured when trying to execute "C:\PROGRA~1\SONICF~2\SOUNDF~1.0\FRGKRN.dll,_SfPlugIn_Grovel_@16-1 Sonic_Foundry_Grovel_Event" [OK]

This bug was removed with the 5.0b version of SoundForge.

Now here is the message I get when trying to launch Acid for the first time:

An error occured during the current operation. An Exception has occured. [OK] [Details >>]

When clicking on the "Details" button, I get these informations:

It seems to show that the "VST Adapter" plug-in is involved. It's a plug-in that allows to use VST plug-ins as DirectX ones. After this bug, Acid is launched and functions normally except that the DirectX plug-in list remains empty. At every relaunch, the bug doesn't occur anymore, but the DirectX list remains empty (except once where the following characters appeared in the plug-ins list : "Cµâw")...

Now that I'm taking time to try to describe and solve this issue, I'm going to try again after having uninstalled VSTadapter. Now I'm trying to reinstall Acid after having uninstalled it. I launch Acid right now... (...) (...) Scanning for audio plug-ins... It works! No crash. Then I'm going to check the DirectX list by clicking on "Insert an assignable FX"... NO! I get a bug message box and then the program crashes and gets closed by Windows 2000:

Well after all, maybe it's not only VSTadapter's fault! At the second relaunch, Acid proposes -again- an empty list of DirectX effects... Finally, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Acid three times : no improvement, the crash sometimes didn't occur when adding an assignable FX but occured when clicking on FX bus on the master channel, AND STILL NO PLUG-IN AVAILABLE!

Please help me and the other users who had the same problems : fix that in the 3.0b version of Acid you're working on, and release it quickly! Thanks...

Hi,
Following Sonic Foundry's information request about what seems to be a plug-ins bug, I've taken lots of time to write the two previous messages in this thread with all the available details. I'm pretty sure this will be of some help to the programmers, so I'd be very glad to have an official answer about it from Sonic Foundry, and to be reassured that the next version of Acid (3.0b) will feature a bugfix for that as Sound Forge 5.0b did.

Thanks--we'll investigate this further. If you could help a bit further by letting us know which VST Adapter you've been using on your system, it'd be much appreciated. There are a number of different versions of VST adapters from FXpansion(Amulet), and SpinAudio.

Thanks again,
Joel

OK.
Well is there a mail address where I could send you the informations without disturbing the forum?

About vstAdapter, it was a 0.3 beta version, and I don't remember there was a brand name, that was a free download. But as you can read in my report, vstAdapter wasn't the real cause of the problem. Now that I've uninstalled it, the problem remains the same...

Is SonicJG or SonicJL here?
If yes, my answer (and new question) is my previous message. ;)

One more thing for you to try- since you are crashing on your plugin scan at the beginning- look at the gray box which lists which plug in is being looked at. Most likely it will pause or halt at the plugin causing difficulty. The name of the particular plugin would be helpful.

ALso, thank you for your help in troubleshooting this problem. Rest assured- we are looking into this.
Thanks.

You're welcome, it's my duty to help you conceive a better (and working) Acid 3.0 (from what I've read in this forum, it should be fastened a little bit too) :)

About the plug-in that may be displayed a bit longer just before the crash, I'm reinstalling the beta version right now. Well this time when I launched Acid 3.0 for the first time, as since I uninstalled vstAdapter 0.3 beta, plug-in scan happens apparently with no problem and no crash (so that may indicate that vstAdapter was causing the crash). BUT since then, the plug-in list remains empty, and the crash occurs half of the time when trying to add an assignable fx or a bus fx (not all the time, randomly it seems, and when it works, it just gives an empty list of plug-ins). I already indicated that in the long previous message. If you take the time to read it, you'll see that everything is clearly described. (I run Win 2000 if that can be of any help, the rest is standard, Pentium III 733MHz, 256Mb, I hope it'll be enough to run Acid 3.0b!) By the way, you really don't wanna give away your mail address!...

Below is what I obtained when I got this Exception Crash when trying to insert an effect.

So Sonic Foundry, based on what I've described, have you found why it's not working? It is very strange that, without vstAdapter, there is no crash during the plug-ins scan, but there is still no plug-in useable and it sometimes crashes when adding assignable fx or bus fx.

When is the fixed 3.0b version of Acid planned for a release? All the users with those crash bugs are waiting for it, and it didn't take such a long time with Sound Forge 5.0b

It would be nice if finally the Sonic Foundry team tells us when Acid 3.0b (fixed version of Acid 3.0 that doesn't crash) is released.... Anyone here with the answer, Sonic Foundry guys? Sound Forge 5.0b just took a week to get done in order to solve the same kind of problems!

Hello,
Are you using 3rd party plug-in VST emulators?

I'm getting this too! I'm trying to run Windows XP, and I wonder if it's due to the Waves NPP plug-ins. I have NOT installed any VST adapters (yet), so I know it's not that.
