I know how to call them up and where to pick and choose them. However, how do you actually apply them to the track so that you hear how the FX took place?

You mean how to assign the FX to a particular track once it's created? Click the mulitpurpose fader mode button on a chosen track in the track list and adjust as necessary. Default for the FX is "-Inf."

You can also adjust the strength of the effect using envelopes on the track's events (in ACID Pro only).

And right-click the multipurpose fader mode button with the FX setting active to choose "Pre Volume" (fader's source before main volume fader) or "Post Volume" (fader's source after main volume fader).
