Subject:SF 11 - Distracting Recording Indicator

Good Day - No luck in Preferences or settings, nothing on the forum so far. When I launch a new recording, there is now a shading process over the timeline that progresses along with recording time.

I'm all for progress, but where can I turn that OFF in SF 11.0? Went back to SF 10.0 until I solve this. Thanks

Are you talking about the little waveform that is displayed above the big waveform in your data workspace?

That little waveform shows the entire timeline for your sound file. If you've zoomed into a segment of it, this little waveform will indicate which segment of the file you're zoomed into. You can also drag the unshaded area to wherever in your waveform you'd like to be zoomed into.

If Timbre4Gear is referring to the 'Overview bar' (full waveform display), it can also be hidden via the 'Options' menu,

Steve - Thanks for your reply. The preview above the work pane was not blowing my skirt up until I read your last sentence about dragging the zoom to another area of the file. That's something I might use on occasion, can't see where to toggle it on/off?

I'll explain what I was really after in the next reply. Thanks, Tim

rraud - Thanks for the response.

I get the overview strip above the workspace (see previous post), I was referring to the shading overlay on top of the workspace itself as recording progresses and the view is "adding pages" creating a strobe effect. (in lieu of screen, I will describe)

Workspace is white before recording begins.

1. Press Record, (armed) the recording starts.
2. light purple overlay denotes progress to the right; gray is the unrecorded space receding to the right.
3. As the recorded file lengthens, the speed of the purple overwriting the gray portion slows down in a linear fashion.
4. Press stop, view returns to normal background with a new waveform.

I've used SF for 12 years and never seen this before, I don't see the point and I'd like to revert to SF11 & previous view. I just find this new view distracting when I'm recording narration especially. Thanks, Tim

I can use SF on WIN 7 desktop and doing so. My WIN 8.1 laptop is another story (worked on 8.0 but not stupid 8.1 "upgrade").

Tim: > When I launch a new recording, there is now a shading process over the timeline that progresses along with recording time.

I think I know to what you are referring - this shading is to show you the region where the current recording is taking place (also shows live waveform while recording, if that option is ticked in Menu|Preferences|General). The shading may not make much sense on a timeline where the recording is commencing at beginning, but is sure useful where we are doing an insert recording i.e. inserting a recording into an existing file, which is something we couldn't do before SFP11.
No I don't know how to turn it off.
To avoid the 'distraction' of the timeline continually re-sizing as the recording progresses,
- after Arm command (which brings up the "sound" window), simply minimize the "sound" window then press Record; when finished just restore the "sound" window.....
or
- call up the Menu|View|Record Options window, resize that and use it to cover the "sound" window whilst recording.

Forgot to check back here, thanks for the reply ChristoC. You have it right.

Can you point me to the precise checkbox in Preferences - General tab? Can't seem to find one that sounds like it controls that track view appearing or not.

As to the insert recording (in middle of existing audio track), I didn't see any difference between SF11 & SF10 in this regard. Maybe we're not talking about the same thing? I've always produced edits separately and then used Paste or Paste Special to blend them in perfectly.

Granted SF11 is steps ahead from the What's New angle, it's simpler easier for me to fire up SF10 and get on with the task at hand. Thanks again.

Sorry I thought I was precise in what I said.

Option I was referring to in Menu|Preferences|General is "Show waveform while recording" - only enables/disables waveform display whilst recording, not the track view itself - you will always see the actual timeline cursor updating during recording.

Insert recording - ability to record on top of existing file, not by editing, but by recording on top.
