Subject:Apply Plug-in Chain in SF11 Pro

Just as SF11 Pro seemed promising and worked well compared to SF10Pro, I'm stuck with a question that seems to be asked by many: WHAT HAPPENED TO APPLYING A PLUG-IN CHAIN? I can't find it anywhere even as I've searched these forums, so that ought to be a HINT to Sony developers that they're screwing up their software ........ I have a FX chain open from a previous SF Pro version.

Even the Sound Forge Pro Online Help gives information that is simply INCORRECT. The help topic "Applying a Plug-in Chain" claims that you can access the menu with Alt+9 (as it used to be), but in SF Pro 11 the actual shortcut is Alt+0. (Alt+9 brings out the spectrum analyzer).

This is just .. way beyond wacky. Can any of you give a quick shortcut to applying the FX chain into an audio file?? Highly appreciated. Thanks.

PS: Ctrl-Shift-P is the "Process selection" shortcut according to the manual, but that doesn't work either.

And:

"Drag a plug-in or chain from the Plug-In Manager to a data window. The Audio Plug-In Chain is displayed.

Use the Audio Plug-In Chain to preview your effects and adjust settings as needed. You can select the Bypass button to hear the original, unprocessed audio.

When you're satisfied with the chain, click the Process Selection button in the Plug-In Chain to apply the effect."

This is also outdated as there is no longer a "Process Selection" button! So even the manual gives out wrong information?!? Nice going.

Ah, finally gave up and read the other thread(s) carefully that handle this very same subject.

Yep, the answer to applying an FX chain is (contrary to what you might know or what you've read from the Help Manual) ... "Save as.." and then the FX chain will be processed as you save the entire file.

Now, that's just stupid. Hard to call it an "upgrade" when it's actually a degradation in what you can do and cannot do with the software. Get a grip, Sony.

Agreed - I do not understand the paradigm or precedent for this new behaviour.

It's not something I've experienced in any other audio editor or DAW.

In fact, it's not really something I've experienced in *any other program* of *any type*.

For example, if I want to apply some formatting to text in Word, I don't have to save the document in order to do it.

If I want to apply a filter or transformation to an image in Photoshop, I don't have to save the image in order to do it.

If I want to run a find and replace on some text files in Visual Studio, I don't have to save all the files in order to do it.

I suppose one could say that having to save the audio file to apply the plugin chain is similar to recording an effect to analog tape, but that would be a very odd limitation to resurrect in 2013.

Can anyone from Sony shed some light on how the new behaviour is intended to improve workflow, please?

You can view the plug-in chain by doing the following:
View (Menu) - Plug-In Chain
or
Ctrl+Alt+0

Once you are happy with your plug-in chain you can save it by typing in a name and clicking the floppy disk.

THEN you can apply it by doing the following:
FX Favorites (Menu) - Apply Plug-In Chain
Choose your chain from the drop down menu
uncheck real-time to quickly process the file
Click Ok

Hope that helps you all out :)

Yes, Arron's (FX Favorites - Apply Plug-In Chain) instructions allow a plugin chain to function as in the previous versions.
IMO, SCS just added an extra step and made it more difficult to do a simple process and should have not changed it... Same goes for the SF-11 'Record' workflow.
FWIW, a Sound Forge Pro project file" <.frg> can be saved to do non-destructive editing/processing.
