Have been with Sony Vegas Pro since version 6 after finding Premier very unstable. Six years later and I guess its time to explore other editors again.. Using version 11 and today was the last straw.. 2 hours out the window with crash after crash.. Done with Vegas Pro..
The last release of 12 is VERY stable & we push our systems very hard. (We routinely render (2) VEGs in the background while editing (1) in the foreground all while burning (2) Blu-rays from ISOs!)
Our Experience:
V9 32 was fine, but renders were slower...
V10e 64 occasionally had black frames - even if we did not background render...
V11 64 was totally unstable & early versions produced black frames...
Latest V12 release = no problems & faster renders with GTX 570 GPU
FCP & PPro have their issues too. IMO I can always work-around my Vegas problems much faster than FCP & PPro. Vegas is more sensitive if there is an error in the source video code so I sometimes convert offending clips to a less compressed format before reloading them into Vegas... This solves 99% of crashes in all Vegas versions... Can't do this so easily with other NLEs...
Can you be sure you won't have similar problems with other NLEs, and/or there may be something else broken in your system ? I guess the other NLEs you may consider have demo versions too.
it really doesn't matter what nle you work with - they all have their bugs, idiosyncrasies, anomalies, and last but not least, seemingly indifferent support when they go belly up on your most important project.
my fall back position would be edius, but 12 is doing rather well at the moment - let's hope it stays that way ;-)
Before VegasPro 12 release, I only use VegasPro 11 for rendering, but still had to keep all editing in 10th version.
But in VegasPro 12, especially after the built #486 is available, everything is so stable.
I know you are frustrated with all crash and crash and crashes, and I know how that feels, and sometimes I also worried if I had to be stranded in 10th, just like a few FCP users who can't go to X, and keep doing in 7...
Try VP12 first...
If you are using Vegas Pro 11.0 you owe it to yourself to download the 30-day free trial of Vegas Pro 12.0. I found Vegas Pro 11.0 to be unstable and I did most of my production work in 10 until Vegas Pro 12.0 came out. So if Vegas Pro 11.0 is your only experience, you really gotta take a look at 12. It's much more stable.
Many of us here have had that "I give up moment" with their NLE, but no matter where you go from Sony Vegas Pro, you are going to have to start a new relationship with your new software.
All the blood, sweat and tears that I went through with VP12 makes this software my b@#ch now.. I can make her do anything I want now.
