I got an update to Windows 8.1 today and noticed if you right click the icon there is an option to check "Troubleshoot Compatibility." I ran that on Sound Forge Pro 11 and it tells me SF Pro 11 is incompatible! I hope Sony plans on fixing this problem quickly! |

The release of Windows 8.1 coincided with the release of version 3.1 of the Windows Application Compatibility Kit ("ACK" for short). Build 272 of Sound Forge 11 has been tested against this revision of the ACK and passed. Those results have been filed with Microsoft as a part of our Windows 8 Logo Certification. What you're seeing is some assumptions made by the compatibility troubleshooter paired with some poor phrasing on Microsoft's part. The real issue is that Windows makes the assumption that there's a problem with the application if you're running the compatibility troubleshooter. Whether or not there's a problem, it'll attempt to fix one. You can attempt the same tests with Chrome or Firefox and you'll get the exact same results - by default the troubleshooter will attempt to run the app in Win8 compatibility mode and claim that the app is "incompatible" if it successfully launches in that state. In reality, the app was never broken. It just launches in Win8 compatibility mode because it's compatible with Windows 8. I'd really been hoping to find a Microsoft application that was packed with Windows 8.1 that'd return the same result as Forge, Firefox or Chrome, but they must blacklist those applications from being run against the compatibility troubleshooter. |

The problem I and others are having is we are unable to open the program! I click the icon on my desktop and am prompted to register it (although I've already registered it). Then I click "next" and the UAC window opens asking me to give permission to run the "Sony Application Registration Utility." I click "yes" and nothing happens. Nada. Zilch. I've repeated the process over and over and the results remain the same. Program will not open. Sony "tech" directed to a page that told me to right-click the icon and "run as administrator" which would then "prompt for registration again, allowing the information to be correctly entered into the registry....."fix[ing] the issue for all other users." I did this but I was not prompted "for registration again" so under "Help" I clicked "Register Sound Forge Pro" and entered the information and clicked send. This did not fix the problem. So I again right-clicked the icon and choose (again) "run as administrator" and went back to help and repeated that process, with the same result. For some reason, the product is not being recognized as being registered by Sony. Why this is I do not know, but I know I have a program that did once work fine but now suddenly does not, a program I paid good money for that I would like to having running as it is supposed to be, without hassle. |

I'm having exactly the same friggin problem. I've wasted a whole day without working at all because of this problem. They pointed me to a page to do a clean reinstall in Windows 8 64. Don;t believe it. Have any of you noticed that if you live in any country other than the U.S., Sony has free telephone support. Why not us!!!! |

I've sent in a support ticket to Sony tech support and so far they seem either to not understand what the problem is or have decided to simply ignore it - either way, I haven't received any response other than a link to an outdated "support" page that was a complete waste of time. It's been over two weeks now and I'm still waiting for a follow up and some help! This does not speak well of Sony! Why would one continue to patronage Sony when they appear to be in denial about the compatibility of their products? |

I have the same issue with SF Pro 11 build 272 It does not start, if not in administrator mode. it is asking fpr registration / activation again, instead. But if you confirm, nothing will happen. Does anybody have a solution for this now? |

Not a solution but a workaround for registration prompt on Windows 8.1 without using "Run As Administrator" 1. Start up Sound Forge, let the registration prompt appear, do not click next yet 2. start task manager>Details>right click "audiostudio***.exe">uncheck UAC virtulization>click "change virtualization" 3. go back to sound forge registration prompt and click next that should start sound forge and drag drop should work. 4. check UAC back in the task manager Anyhow, hope Sony fixes this soon. |

I don't know if this trick will work but I have used it successfully for other applications giving me grief. Temporarily change your regular user account to an admin account. register/activate and then switch the account back to a regular one. I must say I have done this on Windows 7 but never tried it with Windows 8. You be the judge of whether you think it worth trying. |

Same problem here on the first day in 2014. I edited one file successfully and then it stopped working. It is asking fpr registration / activation again, instead. But if you confirm, nothing will happen.. Will they fix it this year? Message last edited on12/31/2013 8:54:20 PM byjacques. |

I tried your suggestion, xte, and got the program running. However, I was not able to save edits. It seemed to be functioning in a limited trial mode. I was, however, able to export edited files. Anyone else have a workaround? Get on the ball SONY and fix this! Message last edited on1/18/2014 2:12:43 PM byoldhumhead. |

Has there been any progress on this front? Are SF 10 and 11 both completely incompatible with 8.1, or are many people using the combo without trouble? |

Great, thanks. So it's apparently not a complete incompatibility, but a spot issue. I'm still a little hesitant to upgrade, given that everything's working. I may wait for AVID to release a PT update that requires 8.1. I'm sure it's coming. |

I'm getting this same problem as described in this topic. Every time I try to start Forge Pro 11 under Win8.1 I get the regristration screen and when I hit the next button nothing happens. I can right click on the SF icon on the desktop and choose "Run as administrator". After doing so it will run after being prompted to make changes for all accounts which it never did before. Btw, I only have one account on this machine and this didn't start happening until the last Windows auto-updates were installed. Message last edited on2/18/2014 2:37:32 PM bycyberbeat. |

+1 I just bought SF Pro 11 (Build 272), and it won't run unless it's started with "Run as administrator" privileges. And the right click "Open With"-dialogue won't work either, unless the program is configured to always run as administrator (and that forces you to go through the UAC approval dialogue when all that you want to do is open an audio file for editing). This is clearly not the way the app is supposed to work, right Sony? Please fix the problem (it's been a known problem for months apparently) or give me a refund. Thanks. |

Hi all, Just a quick follow up on my experience with this issue. I've been using Forge Pro 11 successfully under Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit after taking the advice of going into the properties for the shortcut and checking "Run this program as an administrator" (even though I'm running it from an administrator account to begin with). Anyway, before it runs the UAC pops up every time asking me if I want this application to make changes ... Once I hit "Yes" it loads and everything works as it should. I also went into SF's options under the general tab and unchecked "Show splash screen at start up" and also unchecked "Use Net notify to stay informed about Sony product updates" which greatly speeds up the time it takes to load. I'm having this problem today... but before today I had no problems whatsoever. I'm running Windows 8.1. I've been using it for a few weeks, running normally, that is, not in administrator mode. (Running build 272) Message last edited on3/28/2014 5:04:03 PM bypaharwell. |

I have the UAC problem on Windows 8.1 . I can right click every time and run as adminstrator or turn off UAC but id prefer not to. I upgraded from SF10 where this worked fine and have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling as administrator but it make no difference. Its not a disaster but it is irritating and as so many people have seen it I cant believe it is hard for support to reproduce. |
