Free Boris Textures Unit

dalemccl wrote on 10/30/2013, 2:39 PM
I received an e-mail from Eye Scream Factory regarding a free copy of Boris Textures Unit from a website named pcvideopromo.com.

I was suspicious of anything free, but went ahead and downloaded it. They don't ask for credit card info. I got the serial number via e-mail instantly. Here is the link for anyone interested.

http://www.pcvideopromo.com/products/boris-continuum-textures-unit

Edit/Update. I installed it using the provided serial number. It appears in VP12 as a Video FX, and upon first use it had a "Register" button at the top of the interface window. I clicked on it, entered my serial number clicked "Unlock". Got a message that says it was successfully activated but I need to close and restart the NLE. I did. But all I get is a black screen when I put one of the texture FX on a blank video track. The register button is still there. I tried registering again, and got the same successfully activated message again. But it still doesn't seem to work. The screen is still black and the "register" button is still there. I checked my account at Boris, and found that the Textures Unit is not listed as one of my products.

I'm not sure what is wrong, but anyone else wanting to try the "free" textures unit may want to be cautious before deciding to install it. I think it is legit, but it seems odd that it does not show up in my Boris account, even though the register and unlock process said it was successfully activated.

@dalemccl: I'm sure it is legitimate for two reasons. Namely, BorisFX has partnered with Eye Scream Factory for a number of years, and they have periodically given away other BCC units. Since I have Boris Red (an awesome product IMHO), which already contains this module, I probably won't bother downloading it. Otherwise, I most certainly would.

As an update to my original post: Since registering via the FX's interface button didn't seem to work, I went to the Boris website and registered there (using "Materials Unit" as my product to be registered. It seems to be just another name for the "Textures Unit", which was not listed as a product that can be registered, even though the Boris product page for BCC Units names it Textures, not Materials..)

Materials is now listed in my Boris account. However, in VP12, the "register" button is still present, so I am not sure I actually have a fully activated product - it may be in trial mode. I did discover why the preview screen was black. The FX was shown at the top of the FX interface before the "Composite" button in the FX chain. I moved the FX in the chain to be after Composite and now I can see the textures in the preview screen.

"14 days remain in the evaluation period. This product was installed on 10-31-2013."

hmm, something not right...

EDIT:
I just read again the note below:

"Units with a check mark against them are licensed, You cannot change anything by checking or unchecking these boxes. To license more units, use the edit box above and click Unlock."

[ ] All other Units
[v] Textures

----
I need to make sure if I read this note correctly. With the condition above, is the registration process already complete...?
The 'trial' is actually applying to other Continuum Units ?
Need a clearance here....

Hi - Do the textures work okay?

Any other glitches seen by anybody?

Thx, BIll
CJB wrote on 11/6/2013, 8:51 AM
Yes, they work fine. However the usefulness of this is lost on me unless you use it to apply to text and 3D objects (I don't have the 3D unit). Not all that impressed with the textures either. Looking at the fractal based ones I was hoping that it could be used for smoke or fog. Nah.

I received an email the other day from Eye Scream Factory offering a 'holiday bundle' including both Boris FX 10 and Boris Graffiti 6 for $US199.95 - very tempting given that each of these programmes are the latest versions, work with VP12, and cost $US299.00 each through Boris direct.
On opening the Eye Scream email - which is a Boris partner based on info on Boris' website - the webpage that opened was in fact www.pcvideodemo.com, not Eye Scream Factory. The deal, which also offers what looks like Eye Scream plug-ins, says that the $199.95 cost gets $898.00 in product value. The link to that website is: www.pcvideopromo.com/products/holiday-bundle
While its always great to take advantage of a good deal, I do get wary of deals where "if it looks too good to be true, it probably is". 25% or 30% or even occasionally 50% are reasonably commonplace these days - but 78% off?
I'd really like to know if anybody has taken up this offer and, if so, how did it go? - Did it work out okay with billing, licensing and activation etc?
Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried the current offer for FX and Graffiti, but I had no problems with the previous offer that had a free Textures Unit plus two other units for 50% off. (I purchased one of the two units). Before buying, I called Boris customer support and asked if the deal was legitimate and they said it was. After buying from the pcvideopromo, I got the serial numbers and download links quickly. I had no licensing, activation, or registration problems with the Textures unit nor with the unit I purchased for 50% off.

I would have no concerns about the current offer, if I wanted those products.
