Mov files won't play.

Yesterday it all worked fine. Tonight VMS 12 won't play .MOV files. Neither files from my iPhone 4s, my colleagues Canon or the MOV from GH1 . Quicktime is version 7.71.

I tried the latest quicktime.. but no luck. This is bizarre. I haven't changed anything since last night. I have to submit a surfing film on Friday for a festival and this not helping.
I read an earlier post by musicvid about quicktime 7.6.2.. seems to work for now

Stick with a version of Quicktime that works.
Turn off automatic updates in Quicktime.

Actually this is ridiculous. I use Sony Vegas software. Thats what I paid for . I dont want to keep having quicktime problems. I have to finish a movie for a client for delivery tomorrow and ONCE AGAIN it's as friggin quicktime problem. I didn't change anythng. I'm not connected to the internet. MOV files don't play again. WTF ?????? Automatic updates of quicktime are off, it's version 7.6.2. What does a person do ?? Uninstall, reinstall, download, staert again, stay up all night because SONY hasn't solved this problem.

Hey, cool down.
1. Quicktime is an Apple product. Apple and Sony are competitors.
2. Unfortunately, Windows NLE applications, including Vegas, must use some of the Apple libs to process their proprietary formats.
3. The history of broken Quicktime "updates" which can cripple the Windows NLE experience, are well documented and go back years. Google is your friend.
4. Your complaint about Quicktime should be directed to the folks at Apple. Don't expect a response, however. It is not a Sony issue, and yet Sony updates compatibility with Quicktime in almost every release.

5. If you would like help from this peer forum, double-check your QT version, list any codec "packs" you have installed, and show us your complete MOV file properties using MediaInfo from Sourceforge. Also, uploading an original sample to a sharing site (not Youtube) will help us determine if the problem can be replicated on systems other than yours.

Also, you can try disabling all GPU in Vegas, although it may not have any effect in this case.

Thanks.

Thanks for the advice but when I have a deadline and can't deliver the last thing I want to do is go through the process you have just described. If it is a Apple vs Sony thing then and Apple seems to be winning by making my windows NLE not work ,then what recourse do I have as a working filmmaker than use tools which do work. ? If you knew the amount of hours I have spent sorting out this issue ..well I think you wouldn't be surprised .

If MOV files "suddenly" will not open, than something has changed. It is not likely such a narrow symptom has to do directly with Vegas. Usually it's a silent update.

Look for hidden changes in your security software, QT installation, other apps/utilities/games you may have installed, Windows update, any codec "packs" recently added, drive configuration, and by all means try a system restore to a time when you know it was working.

As a last resort, you can convert your Quicktime files and tackle the issue once your project is finished. Best of luck.

I uninstalled all codec packs, itunes, quicktime andthen installed quicktime 7.62. I updated VMS. It's such an erratic occurrence of this problem. Everything plays back fine then it seems if I play a mov file via VLC this causes the MOV files in vegas not to play . Sometimes the iphone file will be visible and the panasonic mov file not. If I do a render of this project (15 min) then black holes appear at all mov files. I managed to render 3 min sections fine. I also rendered these files in HD and imported them in a new project and re-rendered them but the quality seems lower. How do I look for hidden changes in my software ?

"I uninstalled all codec packs"
Uninstalling existing codec "packs" does not get rid of registry changes, unfortunately.
Full restore from a backup, or clean install is sometimes the only solution, but as a last resort.

I do understand the failings of "uinstalls" whereby the actual uninstall is incomplete . I did a registry clean and too understand this is also not fail proof. In the past I have done complete windows reinstalls and while this works for a while inevitably the problems resurface. Due to the fact that I am able to export shorter pieces without losing MOV files I have concluded that my machine cant handle the export. I will be buying a new machine and also will be looking at other software even though thw workflow of vegas is fantastic
Windows Version:7 64-bit
RAM:8
Processor:intel quadcore 2.4 ghz
Video Card:nvidia geforce gt 240
Sound Card:esi esp1010
Video Capture:
CD Burner:
DVD Burner:
Camera:Panasonic GH1

"In the past I have done complete windows reinstalls and while this works for a while inevitably the problems resurface"

Then you are installing bad things that don't belong on the same computer with a nonlinear editor. Games, some screen capture apps, some video converters, some effects processors, some antivirus software, and most codec packs are known to do just that.

So buying a new computer and new editing software isn't going to cure any of that as long as you keep installing stuff that hijacks your system codecs, registry, and file associations. Keep your editing machine for editing and you will be a lot happier.

Oh, and don't overclock anything.
Best.

Some...pretty broad analysis there. But I agree, keep your editing machine for editing only. That's what I aim to do with a new setup.
