With most post-XP operating systems, there is no limit to the size of the hard drive they can work with. 1 terrabyte drives are getting pretty standard. 4 terrabytes is pretty big, but not unmanageably so.

External hard drives can't transfer data to computer as quickly as internal drives. But in many cases, they can fast enough.

Considering that those tapes normally hold about 17GB (assuming you used the extended play mode to get 85 minutes), multiply that by 20 results in 340GB. Even allowing for creating intermediate files that might be twice the size of the originals you're still in the 1TB range.

Neither Vegas nor *any* other application software has ever had any limit of any sort on hard drive space. Any and all programs simply allow the operating system to take care of the hard drive access for them. This means that any program you want to run can use as large a hard drive as the OS can handle.

I think a 'terrabyte' must be what a mechanical digger takes out of the ground!(:?)

Just make sure to avoid FAT32 formatted drive partitions, as the size there is limited to 4GB, while your captured tapes will be 17GB in size. Go for NTFS.
