What program are you using to play the DVD?

Many computers come with a (or 'more than one') program that will play DVDs, but some computers don't have one. In that case you will need to get one.

What operating system do you have?

In VLC, did you select the option to play a Folder rather than a file? In order to play the DVD with menus, you need to select the VIDEO_TS folder that your DVD files are gathered in.

With Windows XP SP3 or anything newer, Windows Media Player plays DVDs just fine. Under the Play menu use "Play DVD, VCD, or CD Audio" option. If you have XP SP2 or earlier then you must install any other 3rd party DVD playback software, such as whatever demo disc came with your DVD drive. This will install the MPEG2 codec on your system and Media Player will be able to use it.

I haven't bothered to use anything other than Windows Media Player for quite a few years now.

Windows Media Player is not a good software DVD player and never has been - it is subject to many quirks of playing the title - as are all other software players.NOTE this> It is possible to have interaction (read interference) between what each software player does based on the total number of different program installs on the OS and some issues with codecs, namely flavors of Mpeg as an example.
