Where are settings e.g. Process\EQ\Graphic filed so that I may apply these settings to Sound Forge after I have reformatted a HD or installing to a new PC. I want to be able to use settings for various clients at later dates.

Some are in
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Sony\Sound Forge Pro\10.0\Presets

and others in
C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Sony

But I seem to remember, when I tried migrating in the past, that some were also in the Windows registry (or at least required certain registry keys in addition to the files in the locations mentioned above).

Management of these user settings is not a strength of the program, I'm afraid -- they should all be put in one, easy to find place. I'm not sure if this has improved in v11.

It would also be nice if you could set the default directory on File, Open.

In our Download | Utilities section we have a preset manager tool.

Yes, Preset manager can save all the individual plug in presets as well as DX and/or VST plug in chains.

Would be nice if this functionality were built into Sound Forge so that it's more easily discoverable by users.

Once you have it installed, it is available from the Tools menu in SF. I believe you can use it with any Sony Creative software app. Thus, why it is standalone.

except for one slight problem. "preset manager" is more a "preset mangaler". it rarely, if ever, works. I posted the following back in june of this year:

"...trying to use preset manager 2.0k to transfer settings in SF10(507) between my home and work pc's. whenever I try to load the preset file I get an error saying the file is "not in a supported format" and that it "contains an unrecoverable error."

I've searched the forum and found what I thought could be the solution (excluding Izotope mastering plug-ins when creating the preset file), but I found that the error still occurred (the Izotope bundle was being automatically excluded anyway, so it wasn't in the preset file).

other than that, I've found no other solution, and I'm going to need to recreate all my presets by hand...."

there has yet to be any response to that post from anyone at sony. a search shows I'm not the only one who's had the problem, but there seems to be no solution. it's been this way for awhile. I used to be able to go back to an older version of preset manager to get it done, but the newer versions of SF won't support it.

I'd like to know why this is, and when it will be fixed. I use SF on several different computers in several different workplaces, and it would be nice to load my presets when I need them. if the preset manager isn't working, fix it or take it down.
