Subject:Scratchy jerky playback

Hi guys, anyone know how to fix a jerky, scratchy, screechy playback? All other sound on the mac is great so it's not a soundcard. It's been getting steadily worse over time, not suddenly just broken. Reinstall? Download an upgrade? If the latter, I've never been notified of software upgrades. Anyone know how I manually access these? Thanks for any help.
