What do you want from Forge for Windows?

Workflow?
Features?
Gripes or holes in existing functionality?
64 bit native?

Is that the hiss of a can being opened I hear?

In my case, just don't break it. I've managed to adapt my workflow to the changes from SF 8 to 10, and I'm comfy with it now. Of course, my work doesn't require a bunch of the features available. I'm still having trouble with temp files not being removed, and occasionally have to go in and clear out my temp folder as hundreds of MBs of temp files are stuck there. Sometimes GBs of files, but it mostly depends on what I've been doing that day. I think the Batch Converter or scripting is what hangs them maybe?

I cannot live without the batch converter and the scripting functionality. If that goes away, I will find another line of work. I'm not even remotely kidding.

Rob.

My wish list hasn't changed much.

-- Full BWF support, including write / edit compliant metadata.
-- 5.1 VST plugin support (master EBU and ATSC leveling for broadcast is a must-have!)
-- ALAC is one of the things asked for in this thread:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?ForumID=3&MessageID=853765

Other than the first two, I'm actually pretty happy.

+1 for what Musicvid said. Especially 5.1 support. A built in EBU etc. metering function that scans and marks where you're over a threshold.

For plugins: Ability to make custom folders and organize everything the way I want. Have it stay that way if I rescan plugins and not reset unless I tell it to.

This is a direct quote from:
NAB Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act Summary of Best Practices 2011

"
Loudness must be measured for all forms of a program’s audio delivery to listeners, e.g., 5.1-channel surround, stereo downmix, and monaural sum.3 The loudness of ancillary audio services such as video description or alternative language versions must also be measured."

If Sony doesn't want to develop their own BS 1770 meters, that is entirely understandable. However, it is a reasonable request to provide a parking space on the master for 5.1 VST and AU (now that SF is into Mac) plugins from outside vendors (e.g., Nugen and Toneboosters).

My biggest want was multichannel, and we have that now. Thanks!

I'd like Export Regions to support multiple output templates, so that i could save all the regions as MP3 or other formats directly from the source project.

Also, when using batch converter or the above mentioned function, i'd like some way to be able to give it a list of individual ID3 tag information to use for each file. Saving them all one at a time so i can enter it, or going into the properties editor in Windows Explorer to edit them all afterward gets pretty tedious.

Save Loop Region Only (like Vegas) could make a lot of editing tasks just a smidgen easier, without having to copy and paste to a new window first.

Keyframable pitch/bend! The current effect is good, but nearly impossible to control what pitch happens where. It leads to a lot of repetitive experimentation and undo to get it right. Being able to draw and adjust nodes on a full size timeline (like Velocity envelope) and have it non-destructive would make the task a lot easier, as well as allow for unlimited pitch changes instead of the mere handful we can do now. And of course, when you get this done, port it back into Vegas!

Linux version? Sound Forge is also the one SCS app i could see myself running on a tablet, so an Android version would be lovely too.

CDA updated, with the well-documented desired features.

Some level of built-in spectral editing.

Direct ALAC support.

I'd really like for the full range of CDA features (upgraded to include VST plugin support) to be integrated with the event-based editing in Sound Forge - i.e. making event-based editing non-destructive, with each event able to host dedicated FX. That would be incredibly useful not only for CD building, but for all kinds of audio work.

I'd also like the batch processor to offer more ergonomic browsing of directory structures - currently it collapses the directory tree between runs, so you have to navigate all the way through it again. The ability to display favourite directories in the batch processor would also be helpful.

Related to the above, it would be nice if the batch processor could be a dockable window like the rest of the GUI.

When working with video, conformance by default of the project dimensions to the source video dimensions.

Different fade shapes in the crossfade loop tool.

+1 to spectral editing.

+1 to more user control over the organization of FX, and the persistence of the organized structure after VSTs are rescanned.

@musicvid,

Have you tried any multi-channel VSTs in Forge? IIRC it works fine with the built-in plug-ins and worked with some multi-channel freeware VSTs I'd dug up some time ago.

If so, what are you trying to use and what's broken?

I downloaded SF Pro 10d last night to test, and you are right. My Toneboosters appears to be working. That's great news, but I feel embarrassed about having posted misinformation. I try really hard not to do that.

I'll modify my feature suggestions a bit to include full BWF read/write and native EBU/ATSC loudness metering. In the meanwhile, an upgrade may be in my future, since this is something I have needed.

My unconditional apologies to Peter. Does this mean VST is now working on the Vegas Pro surround master as well?

SoundForge still unjustifiably acquires all available ASIO Streams with some soundcards. If VST and/or native tracks are used then this won't succeed because those internal streams can't be used by ASIO. e.g. high-end SSL Mixpander and MX4 DSP cards; therefore requires a registry hack by user to limit the number of available streams.
[that used to be the case with VegasPro, but was solved many moons ago .... be good to finally solve for SoundForge too].
If you need more details email me.

All mentioned plus:

- Better tabbed window implementation...maybe move the tabs to a column on the sides of the windows so that titles can be stacked on top of each other, allowing quick access to multiple open files.

- Option to export window layouts, presets, icon arrangement, options, etc. for future retrieval in case the software needs to be re-installed.

- Real-time multi-band spectrum analyzer

One new feature I would like to see added is a metronome. It would be helpful when creating loops and fine-tuning tempos, etc. I’m surprised after all these years, there’s never been one included.

If metronome is added, do not model it on the Vegas metronome = When setting "Note that gets one beat" to a setting OTHER THAN "Quarter" in the Vegas Project Properties - Ruler Tab, the Metronome does not change - it always plays on Quarter notes.

Here are two gripes that I have with SF Audio Studio 10:

1. No way (that I know of) to select all data from inside a plugin or effect window.
SF Pro has this functionality but Audio Studio doesn't. For instance, I'd like to make a selection of 1-5 seconds, setup noise reduction using this sample and then apply the settings to all data. Well, there's no way to do that. If you leave the plugin window without applying then the settings are all lost.

2. I totally don't understand why Audio studio has the Time Stretch but not the Pitch Shift, which is a much simpler operation (without preserving the duration, that is). I need to adjust the pitch of some recordings transferred from tapes, so I absolutely want the duration to change but Time Stretch does not allow that.

Denis: i don't have a study version, but try this for #1 ... with the plugin window still open, triple-click on the full waveform in the background. This should select the entire file.

For #2, there is a simple work-around. Double-click on the sample rate displayed underneath the main editing window and change the number. For example, if your recorded audio is slightly too fast and you need to slow it down, type in a slightly higher number. Now, Process / Resample back to the original frame rate. This does a pure pitch shift.

@Chienworks

#1. Unfortunately this does not work for me.

#2. The thing is, I need to bring the recordings to as close to "on key" as possible instead of just speeding them up or slowing them down some. The resampling approach implies a few trial-and-error cycles because I can't monitor the output while with the SF Pro Pitch Shift I can, and I can really fine-tune the shift by going up or down in 1 cent steps.

To run 64-bit plugins natively without a wrapper (even if invisible).

To operate natively using the full file-size and memory available in a 64-bit operating system, without having to kludge things.

Or why not a 32-bit version of Vegas Pro 12 ?!!!

I kinda agree with that. Every Vegas user i know personally is still primarily working on 32 bit hardware.

Yeah, i know, no one's sold 32 bit PCs for years. But, all our old 32 bit PCs are still alive, kicking, and more than adequate for the task. It would be fiscally irresponsible to upgrade to new PCs just to let us run one piece of software, for a function we already have covered.

Discontinue Acid Pro!
Amalgamate it's best features into Sound Forge Pro
and make a killer DAW/Editor/Mastering Suite
with SCS's workflow and tools - something like Studio One has managed to do.
And of course 64 bit platform.
It's been made very clear due to lack of development and updates that Acid Pro is dead.
Do something incredible or don't do anything at all!

I just don't see how one could combine ACID and Sound Forge. The UI and editing methods are so different i can't see them co-existing. ACID and Vegas, yes, that would work well. In fact, Vegas was born out of ACID, not out of Sound Forge.

I would have to agree with Kelly; there's no way ACID's features could be folded within Sound Forge.

Between Sound Forge's almost-dizzying array of editing tools combined with ACID's almost-dizzying array of sequencing tools, it would be a nightmare UI-wise. It would ultimately have to be modular somehow if it were the case (and they kind of already are since you can do "round trip" editing between the two).

I *could* see a merge between Vegas and ACID, but that means Vegas would have to employ ACID's paradigm; musicality, tempo, key, VSTis, the whole lot. Vegas already employs ACIDization to some degree but nowhere near the paradigm ACID already employs.

Subject:RE: What do you need and want?
Reply by: Chienworks

And for someone like me who's primary audio work is recording live performances, "ACID-izing" Vegas would be a disaster. Vegas works for my needs perfectly as is. ACID is just the wrong tool all together. A combined tool would only be useful for me if all the ACID features could be turned off.

Well, there's Cool Edit/Audition. Wave editor and multitracker all-in-one. Once you got multitracks, Acid goodies are just a hop, skip and jump away. Me, I'd just roll all Sony products into one mega app and save a ton of money making pretty boxes for individual products.

Vegas, ACID and Sound Forge (if you also include SpectraLayers Pro)...all in one app?

I would love to hear how this UI would look and what it would be called. I'm going with, "Menupalooza, where the UIs go to die™". lol

To be serious, you really can't integrate them, the main reason being each app is used differently by different people, Sound Forge being the greatest example since it's an audio editor that can work with just about any DAW software.

Nobody is going to buy the whole lot just to get Sound Forge, for example, when all they want is an audio editor for their workflow.

@ To be serious, you really can't integrate them

Why not? You got dozens of DAWS out there already that do everything now. These apps are samplers, recorders, editors and sequencers all rolled into one. But you know what? Sony has to decide if they want to stay in the high end or the low end of the market. Their sales will dictate where they go. I just can't see Forge as a standalone wave editor at that price range anymore. What 'new' stuff are they gonna tack-on that's not already in hundreds of cheaper and capable wave editors? Forge for the Mac was a clue. Anyway, it's all good. Me, I'm happy with what Sony got now. Soon their 'Studio' products will contain all the features 99% of the world needs at a great price point. But what do I know?

In fact I much prefer 'separates' , even with SF/CDA. To much rolled into one app means tripping over unrelated commands and menus getting in the way of focussed work.

Now, how about implementing the long-requested tweaks to CDA !
- VST Plugins !
- Some way to reduce CPU-load when many FX on many events/tracks, to enable real-timer preview ( I like mastering whole discs in CDA).
- Save As ISO disc image
- Save As DDP image

No meshing of the apps BUT I would love if the Sony ACID Creation tools made REAL ACID loops that were recognized by other apps. Right now, the stretching info is not included so Battery doesn't consider it a real loop until I import it into ACID and resave. I'd rather just create the loop directly without the additional step.

Off the top of my head, things that would speed up my workflow:

- Hot keys to select the individual db level inputs in the mix panel
- The "more windows" search box could have a multi character search (and drop down history)
- Ability to bind keys to select a predefined duration (spend so much time doing ctrl + alt+ d, tab, tab, type in duration, enter)
- Ability to copy audio but no markers, audio and markers (current behavior), or just markers. instead of fumbling to find remove all markers/remove markers in selection, copy, undo. or the opposite, mute audio, copy markers, undo. in fact a hot key for "remove markers in selection" would generally be useful as well.

Also if markers could have "groups" which you could independently toggle the visibility of different groups (and ctrl + left/right ignores them) that would be great.

Ripple delete? Hasn't Sound Forge already done this since version 1.0? Or are you describing something other than having the deleted space close up with the material after it moving to the left to fill in the space?

In Sound Forge, (since version 8 i believe, when multichannels was added), you can click on the number/channel header at the left of the waveform window to select/deselect various channels. Only the selected ones will play, and deselected ones will be mute.

Even in older versions, with only left & right channels, this was still true in a similar fashion, but the selection was handled differently.

I really would like SF11 to act the same as SF9 while expanding/contracting the time line.
SF9:
1) highlight the rough area I want to edit. (bad takes I want to delete)
2) use the scroll wheel on the mouse to expand the timeline so I can see in detail the point at which I let go the left mouse button while highlighting.
However, and this is the important bit, SF9 expands from the above point WHILE KEEPING THE START POINT VISIBLE, until the highlit area FILLS the time line, then it loses the start point if you expand more.

SF11:
1) as above
2) the expansion works by keeping the end click point centred on the screen.
This means the highlit area only fills HALF the screen before the start point is lost off screen.

Frustrating because it means extra work and time by me because I can't get to see both start and end points with the same detail as with SF9 if I just use the wheel.
I would really like that feature put back in 11 thanks.

Sound Forge Explorer SEARCH functionality...

We're at version 11 and there is no way to search for files within Sound Forge directly. (Searchable metadata too would be nice, as not even windows explorer can do that)

I've started to migrate away from Sound Forge as much as possible, to just using my DAW as an editor, as it has at least some basic search functionality and this makes my workflow much quicker.

I agree with much of what is being said here, especially Chienworks (I find myself agreeing him a lot of the time actually).

That said, SFP11 is a mature product, so the features are good, most of the kinds are ironed out, and now it's refinements.

One thing that isn't mature is the look of it. Maybe there is a way to change it, but when I'm running both Vegas and SFP, my studio lights up - there's no option to darken the interface. It's like staring into dual monitor headlights.

I'd like to smooth out the recording options interface a bit too. Because I capture audio from a bunch of different devices, system, MOTU, camera, external devices like R-26 etc, the back-and-forth into the preferences menu and the record setup is very bleh.

The upshot is, for what i do, the things I don't like...are few and far between.

I'm not sure if this is still (supposed to be) an active thread but since others are still using it... I just went to do some music editing and thought I've have another look in here and I see that people are still asking for the same thing I asked for, so I might as well state it again by just copy/pasting what someone else said:

"I want back button Apply Plug-In Chain in Plug_in Chain window!!!!!"

Although now that I've read it again I think I will correct that a bit to "We need the Apply button in the plug-in chain window brought back!!".

This is a mastering program. Volume adjustments are the number ONE function of this kind of program so being able to apply a volume envelope quickly and easily should be the number one concern.

Since the last time I posted about this I switched back to SF10 and it's been great to actually get some work done again, but now I have to put up with things I know have already been fixed in 11. This is the ONLY thing that stops me from using V11, and will prevent me from buying any future versions.

So thanks in advance for giving us back that functionality. :)

Yes - being able to apply (say) a volume envelope and then normalise the result would be great.

Currently with the envelope there, normalising works on the original waveform, not the one that would be there as a result of the envelope.

Even Saving prior to Normalising does not update the waveform and clear the envelope. You actually have to close the file then reopen it to see the result of the volume envelope.

A dead easy "Feedback/bug report" button like in Gmail and Chrome has.

That way when - in your busy work-day - you come to think of something or stumble upon an issue - the Feedback button is only a click or two away.

Track EQ :) -- I really really miss Track EQ in Sound Forge.

Track EQ?? It's available in my version of SF Pro 11.0 (Build 272)
It's a DX plug.. so it's not in the VST folder(s) if that's where you're looking.

Have to agree with this a lot. I know Windows already has a sound selector feature so it *should* be able to handle the task, but the thing is, it's flaky, and it changes from version to version, often radically. Honestly, when i try to switch to different inputs i'm not really sure it's actually working until i try feeding signal in, hit record, and see what's recorded, if anything. I can't count how many times i've had to go back to Windows sound control panel and select again before it actually sticks.

That, and the fact that since we're recording in Sound Forge, it would be nice to be able to select and control the recording inputs in Sound Forge. I know many of us have fielded questions from newer Sound Forge users asking "how do i select which input to record and set the level? I've searched all over Sound Forge and read the manual and can't find it." Telling them that they have to use Windows for this makes Sound Forge seem a little sloppy and unprofessional.

Major problem with sf11 workflow is that if you keep saving with over-write the old file-name, the plugin chain keeps getting re-applied.

Surely with the (slightly obscure ?) workflow of SF11, once a plugin chain has been applied it should be marked as such, and over-writing an already-applied/saved file-name should invoke extra warnings, or somehow be prevented ?

I hear ya Geoff. That is rather annoying.
I would have much preferred SCS left much of the chainer functionality the way it was in previous versions.
Probably another case of the designers never actually using the software.. at least in a real-world work environment.

On the other hand, I guess you could do the same applying the chain 'manually' , if you really tried ! Just seems an easier mistake-a to make-a in 11, especially in a long editing session ...

Allow deactivating - maybe I move from computer to computer more often than others, but I seem to always be running up against the limit on my activations, and have to call support to up it. If I could just deactivate it on the old computer I’m moving from, that could be avoided. Better, you might consider that, plus allowing it to be installed wherever, with just the two activations.

Make it 64 bit - that would allow more memory, so more audio open at the same time, more processes, more background.

Allow Batch Converter processing in the background - currently, if you start a batch, you have to wait til it’s done to be able to continue editing.

Keyboard shortcut to remove a marker - I’ve got my playhead (CTI) sitting on the marker; I’d like a way to delete it without having to right click on that little orange square.

Stop having problems saving a file - is it really so hard to save a file? Hardly a session goes by when I don’t get the “An error occurred while saving one or more files. An error occurred writing the file. Make sure you have write access to the file/folder and that there is enough free space.” I have access, and there is enough free space!! And I just saved a few minutes ago! This has been a problem for as long as I can remember, on every machine I’ve owned. Yes, usually just saving again works, but really, no other software has this issue. Can we please squash this bug?

Customization exporting and importing - okay, I’ve got my space set up, preferences to my liking, and my keyboard shortcuts set up; it’d be great to be able to save them out to preserve them and import them back on another machine.

Customization retention - I like to have the windows stay the way I left them. One example, I have the metadata tabs on top, but closed up. SF opens with them all disclosed instead of tucked away as I left them. (see batch window)

More metadata - I now need to use an MP3 tagger to finish tagging my files (album art and lyrics, for example). The recent poll seemed to be asking about what we’re doing for finishing, but didn’t really cover my workflow. I’m either burning CDs or uploading MP3s, neither of which gets fully supported in SF.

Multiple burners - now that it’s stepped up it’s game on burning, it needs to step it up a bit more. Do I really need to rely on Nero to burn to multiple CD burners at once? And, how about letting me specify how many discs I want to burn, rather than the obtuse, “The burn operations was successful. Would you like to burn another disc?” message that comes up after burning? (Which requires you to put in another disc and click okay - it can’t even detect another disc load....)

Disc image burning - it’d be great to be able to make an iso image file, which could be used to overcome some of the current burning limitations.

DDP image creation - it’s great to be able to make a Red Book disc, but a lot of replicators would really rather have a DDP image that can be FTP’d rather than a physical disc.

Preview a cut in event mode - your website says this works, but it doesn’t work for me - it always skips over the event instead of playing thru the edit.

Dedicated event tool keyboard shortcut - now the best I can do is a toggle between event tool, zoom tool, and edit tool - allow a shortcut to choose the tool I want (or to switch between standard and event edit mode)

Batch window opens too small - can’t fill in all the metadata without scrolling or resizing window. I realize it may not fit in all computer monitor windows (tho I’d bet most high enough resolution now), but it could remember what it was last sized to and its screen position, and go back to that on re-open.

Lock channel selection default - Can’t lock the channel selection by default. Since I’m usually editing the audio as a whole and not on a channel basis, the first thing I have to do after opening a sound file is lock that. Why can’t I make that the default? Maybe there’s a setting somewhere I can’t find? Why can't it remember the next time I open the file?

Keyboard shortcut to Deselect - Yes, I can change the selection, but I can’t just deselect.

Volume Envelope - Seems silly that it’s a Plug-in Chain - and now that I can’t process it, I can’t apply it without closing the project! Lots of users have complained already about the new way the Plug-in Chain now works. I’ll heartily second that - having to close a file to apply it - whatever in the world…? BUT, it’d be nice to have real volume and pan envelopes NOT tied to the Plug-in Chain

.... and at least the DDP and ISO option in CD Architect , which remains a more focussed CD authoring app, in my opinion.

I love final mastering in CDA as a distinct separate app to SF, being able to easily jump to any point on the timeline, without the distractions of a full editor, and tweak the individual tracks in that view.

CDA also needs updates, including VST, and fixing the plugin concurrency-resource-hog problem. And the multiple target-drive thang !

But don't expect too much - these thing have been begged for, for many many years. Even though, after half-inventing CDs, Sony haven't really seem that interested in CDA for 5 years or more......

However now PH is onto it and asking for suggestions :-)

"CD Architect , which remains a more focussed CD authoring app"

I dunno, Geoff. With that opinion i'm not sure why you're so interested in having more plugin and editing support included. Don't all of those things pull CDA away from being an authoring application and move it towards being an editing and mastering tool? Yet, on the other hand, you say you want to master and you also indicate other uses beyond authoring, which seems to indicate you want it to be more than an authoring tool.

Perhaps my view is a little colored due to the fact that i've never had CDA running. Sonic Foundry once offered me a free license for CDA 5 after a customer service issue that they otherwise handled impeccably, but it didn't work. Later on when i got 5.2 included with a Sound Forge purchase i wasn't able to install it because the bum version 5 install was still there. I've just never tried it since then. Not that i've really cared because ever since Vegas 3.0b i've done all my CD authoring & burning with Vegas, or now with Sound Forge 10.

But, it seems to me that almost everything you want CDA to do, Vegas & Sound Forge already do, and a lot of those features are things that you claim CDA shouldn't be doing. I'm not sure why it should be difficult to ignore everything else that Vegas *can* do, when using it to author & burn an AudioCD. It seems very simple and straight-forward to me.

Just more straightforward in CDA.

Make the effort to try it !

Aside from it's already discussed shortcomings.

#01: please do not use microsoft dot net framework in SF developpement.
I have several software on my great computer and because of this some soundforge tools doesn't work correctly (and sony support just doesn't care!).
#02: Better vst plugin sortting
#03: 64 bits support
#04: search engine using metta tags
