Subject:SF on PC, DAW on Mac?

Is this possible to have my SF and PC laptop (just a Sound Forge editing machine) to edit my audio files from my Mac and Ableton DAW?

I use Cockos Reaper and Ableton, and both have options for editors.

I have tried Parallels and Bootcamp, which are ok but slow.. but it would be good to have a dedicated editing PC for just SF to edit my audio in my Mac.

I have a direct Network 100mbps cable set up between PC & Mac and some shared folders. My 'samples' folder is on the PC and my Mac accesses these fine.

I use older SF 4.5c, v5.0 (as they have DIRECT Mode) and Sound Forge 8.0d

The DIRECT mode way or working doesn't really work as the PC wants total access to the file 'directly' so i can't seem to get this to work. However "undo past save" on SF8 works (sometimes)... I have the file in SF8 (pc) open, and its open in Ableton Live (mac).

When i make edits on PC and re-save, and refresh in Mac, the updates are made but it can be a little flaky..

Is there a better way of doing this, ie a router hub between computers i've heard could be better, and at the Cockos Reaper forum there was a hint that you could press 'edit' on Mac Ableton and the file shoot through the network and open on PC SF?! but this was never elaborated on, but could be worked around?

Maybe have the 'samples' folder on the Mac and let the PC access it that way?

Any help would be great

Sound Forge Pro Mac would be my first suggestion, but I am sure there is a reason that is not an option.

Also, there is no reason Boot Camp on a Mac should run slow. Boot Camp allows your computer to boot into a 100% Windows machine so, unlike Parallels, it should use the entirety of the computer's hardware, just like a Windows computer. There must be another element (maybe a USB connection?) that's slowing the works down.

No offence, but i was made up with the launch of SF Mac, but its just not the same as the PC version with floating windows, and I had lots of crashes.. I decided this wasn't for me. I was disappointed..

Bootcamp means booting your Mac as a PC - I need Mac at the same time hence Parallels, but a seperate editing PC is easier so i have both PC and Mac running at the same time, hence this question..

I don't think there is any way to do exactly what you're describing. You could just have the file stored on some kind of cloud drive, like Dropbox or any of the myriad other solutions of this type. Then when you edit the file on your PC and go back to it in your Mac session, you should only have to refresh the waveform (at least that's what I would think in Reaper, not sure about Ableton).

I know this doesn't help, but both Ableton and Reaper run on PC, which I'm sure you know already.

Rob.

Thanks, yes i have looked into this, and it seems Gobbler maybe the best solution to this

they are currently working on SYNC to update files between platforms but its still coming.. I have tried others a while back and the update process is too slow, hence why a more grounded HD drive over network i thought maybe better?

Yes, at this point a network drive is going to be much faster. My router allows me to connect a network drive, and that is how I keep files that I want to move between my systems.
