I'm pretty new at all this PC music world, I have a SB Live! card and a Roland VA-7 which is half organ half synthy. My problem is when I record the song in Midi from my VA7 and then bring it to my computer, the sounds often don't sound alike. I'm guessing it's because of the Live card but still how can I create a near equal sound of the one I'm playing from my keyboard?

Thanks in advance!

You've already answered your own question. It is the Live card, because it uses cheap Analog to Digital converters and then again during playback of cheap Digital to Analog converters. If you want to record what you're hearing then you have to buy some "Pro Audio" equipment, thus buy a $300+ pro card and get better sound. Same goes for any audio equipment. There's a reason that a $1000-$20,000 Lexicon reverb unit sounds better than a $150 Boss Reverb. Better electrical components and more R&D equals better sound and more costs.

What professional sound cards would you recommend?

I would recommend something from RME audio or Echo. Here's the links:

Are you recording the audio output of your keybaord, or are you saving the file as a .mid (perhaps on a diskette or through midi cables) and bringing it to the computer? If it's a .mid file (or through midi cables) the sounds are going to be quite different because you are using two different sound engines.

If you are using the audio outputs of your keyboard into the audio inputs of the soundcard, then you DO need the more professional card that Rednroll suggested.

Well, midi seems the only logical way cause I can easily take the audio output of my keyboard and put it in the input of my sound card and I'll get the correct sound.
But there has to be a reason all the professionals are using midi, right?

BTW - Thanks for the links!

What do you mean by MIDI, exactly? MIDI does not record the audio, it only records data (such as note on, note off etc).

Right, but won't a better sound card supply more professional sounds like my VA-7 then say the Live! card?

What I actually want to know is - If people can record the audio output of their keyboard into the input of the sound card, why are they still using the midi connector? Midi is very good for concert with multiply insturments but for recording?....

You don't need to use the midi if that's all you're doing is recording directly into sound forge from your keyboards audio outs. I think you added some confusion in your original post when you mentioned the word "midi". I understood this as your roland keyboard has a built in sequencer and is playing a sequence to trigger the audio on it. Vanblah, thought you where trying to record "Midi" or playing a sequence to trigger sounds on your sound card to record into sound forge, which a lot of people ask also on how to do and it can't be done.
