After having tried unsuccessfully to isolate a pure 'hiss' sample (with no other attendant sounds)from any of the pre-recorded cd's I was trying to edit, I got a sample from just plugging in a mic and recording blank space for a couple of seconds. The noise print I was then able to obtain has helped me reduce tape/broadband hiss on a couple of analog to digital cd's, and I am really very satisfied with the results. After having done that, it made me wonder why SF does not include anything similar in Noise Reduction 2.0. It would be nice if they included a couple samples of tape hiss, electrical hum, line buzzing, etc. There doesn't seem to be any lack of what gets included in Acoustic Mirror, as far as modeling goes. How tough would it be to include some noiseprints of the more common noise problems we're likely to encounter regularly, so that it would make the program more functional and useful and helpful? And why hasn't something so simple and obvious been considered by SF before? sk |

I agree. I've made a preset for cassette hiss and 1/4 inch tape, many years ago, since these were my most common noise problems I ran into. I have on occassion had clients bring me CD's in that where transfered from tape and wanted me to do some noise reduction. So they thought they where doing me a favor by editing the top and tail of the recording and not leaving any pure hiss. Luckily I had my own presets and used those noise prints to accomplish the job. Of course the ideal scenario would be to have the actual noise print of the hiss being reduced, because hiss can have many pitch varyiations to it, but SOME noise reduction is better than none. |

Thanks as always, Red. (And well wishes for a happy new year to you and your lovely wife. BTW - Does she happen to have a sister? lol) But seriously. I got some feedback at another forum that basically said the variations are so dramatic that it would be impossible to provide pre-packaged hiss or hum noiseprints. (A quick aside - I really HAVE to get new eyeglasses; every time I see 'noiseprint' I keep thinking it says 'noseprint'.) Anyway, soon after I saw that post I tried my 'trusty' saved hiss preset, and it didn't work on the song I was using it on. I guess there really are too many variations. But heck...when you look at all the variations in 'Acoustic Mirror', it doesn't seem like it would be too tough to toss in a couple 'generic' versions of hiss and hum. Live and learn! And I always maintain that there is no such thing as a stupid question. (Sure...there are plenty of stupid questioners, but that's different.) And that the only stupid question is the one not asked. sk |

Thanks for the info SK. Lol, you've asked the same question that all my friends have asked when I brought my wife to the states this past summer as their jaws dropped on the ground. She actually has 2 younger sisters and (in her own words) "a much better looking cousin" that she wants to hook a friend of mine up with. I have not seen this cousin, but my friends have told me to not bother coming back until I successfully scored some pictures of this cousin during this trip. You know, I'm feeling kinda guilty for posting these non-audio related messages, but I guess it might be more entertaining than some of these "Sound Forge Freezes, when I stand on my head and put my finger in my butt" type of questions. I would really like to see some posts where I pick up a trick or two, instead of hearing all those whinings and putting their messages here, instead of contacting tech support where they belong. Ok, now wait a second here. I'm neither an audio engineer nor a mathematician, but something just doesn't add up here, Red. She wants to hook up your friend with her cousin AND her two younger sisters? Gee. Brazil really IS a pretty wild place. I had no idea. Better eat your Wheaties, big guy! sk (And MY Sound Forge always freezes when I lean a little sideways and put my finger in my ear. I figured it was just something with Windows.) |
