Subject:Sound Forge 10 Pro just installed, won't run

I just purchased the Vegas 12 Pro Suite and everything appears to install correctly. The one problem I seem to have is with Sound Forge 10 Pro when I try to start it up.

It gets to the part where it says it is initializing DirectX Plugins and then an error window "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library, Runtime Error!, Program ...ogram Files(x86)\Sony\Sound Forge Pro 10.0\Forge100.exe, abnormal program termination"

I have followed the instructions on the knowledge base about uninstalling the runtime redistributals and installing Sound Forge again, Did not work. I let windows update all the runtimes, still does not work. Everything else on my computer works fine.

I have also checked all my .net installs and they are there.

Any ideas?

Dunno if still the case, but setup used to create a folder 'Sony Setup' in Program Files. If there, delete this before re-installing. Long shot, but worth a try...

geoff

Thanks for the suggestion, but didn't fix it.

You could try uninstalling SF with a third-party uninstaller (such as the Revo Uninstaller) that wipes previous SF registry entries, folders, ect., that the OEM uninstaller leaves behind. This 'could' delete some shared files in VP as well, so care should be taken.. or just uninstall-reinstall both SF and VP.

Interesting that Vegas starts and Forge doesn't. But since it is near the DirectX scan...

Check the log files in C:\Users\<you>\AppData\Local\Sony\Sound Forge Pro\10.0\.

There should be one for DirectX and one for VSTs. My guess is that you have a DirectShow filter from something else that doesn't like being picked up and shaken by Forge.

All I see is:
"INFO 2013-05-13 02:03:30 **** Grovelling DirectX plug-ins in-proc ****"

Thanks

Thanks for the suggestion but that didn't work neither. Sony is ignoring my help ticket too.

There's a third-party freeware app called DXMan by AnalogX that will list all DirectShow filters installed on your system. Might be worth a shot to see if there's something in there causing problems (typically things installed with camera/video software).

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't know how DXMan shows me a problem filter.

DXMan just shows what is installed. If there's something from a third party video package in there, you can try to 'Remove' it, then try Forge, repeat ad nauseum.

An alternative that does not muck with the registry (which 'Remove' does) is to just temporarily rename or move the target .ax or .dll file shown in the 'Info'. Just remember to put it back once forge starts successfully.

Tedious, I know. DirectShow filters are supposed to follow a specific standard (COM) or just not register themselves globally, but rule-breakers abound. Too bad Forge still looks for them at all. As far as audio processing plug-ins go, DirectX is dead.

You can disable groveling for third-party DX plugins by adding the /NODXGROVEL flag to the Forge 10 commandline.

To do this:

1.) With Forge closed, Right-click the Forge 10 icon and choose "Properties".

2.) Modify the "Target" field in the "Shortcut" tab of the properties window to include the aforementioned /NODXGROVEL flag.

So, if you were performing those steps on Forge 10 installed in the default location,, the target field would say "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Sound Forge Pro 10.0\Forge100.exe"

You’d want to change that so that it said "C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Sound Forge Pro 10.0\Forge100.exe" /NODXGROVEL

An image of the end result.

After that, just click Apply, Ok, and re-open Forge.

Just keep in mind that this will prevent any third-party DX plugins from being discovered by Forge.
